(PPROPRIATION FOR BUILDINGS 5 REQUESTED Government Agencies in Rented’ Quarters at Washington, D. C. WASHINGTON, Jan. 6.—Immediate fathorization of from $25,000,000 to $20,000,000 for erection in Washington of bufldings to house government agencies now in rented quarters was recommendéd in a report to congress by the public buildings commission of which Senator Smoot, republican, Utah, is chairman. Economy, through rental savings was the basis of the recommendations which included also a proposal for erection in the historic pension build ing court, where many presidential inaugural balls have been held, of steel racks for filing government records. The fnaugural ball has been abandoned for a number of years. New appropriations for public build- ings, the commission recommended should be available at the rate of two or three million dollars annually. If this should be done, the commission said, all government activities would be housed in government owned quar- ters in a few years. The report. stated that the govern- ment paid $1,135,000 for rental of buildings in Washington in 1919 and only $524,000 at present as a result of the supervisory work of the com- mission.
