NEW YORK, Nov. 15.—An inevi- table rally in prices occurred today when it became evident that the re- cent Nquidation and boar selling had depressed prices tp ievels which at- tracted strong buying. Re-purchases by the.shorts were on a large scale and public buying was also a factor in causing many advances of one to 18 points. Sales approximated 1,200, 000 shares. NEW YORK, Nov. 15.—Iritial prices were slightly mixed with spe- cial shares showing a repetition yesterday's liquidating salen, especi- ally Consolidated Gas which dropped 4% points in response to the new capitalization plan. Dupont was also off three points, American Suger pre- ferred 2% and Chesapeake and Ohio and Burns Brothers A one poirt. Ad- vances, however, wsre in ihe major- ity, and the entire list movec up at a rapid pice in sympathy with the y for the railroad, steel, and high priced oll shares. fie advanced 214, Chicago ern 2 points, and New York Central, Delrware Lackawanna Read- ing, New Orleans Texas and Mexico, and Wheeling and Lake Erie prefer- red 1 to 1%. Crucible, Bethlehem B and Gulf States Steels ruled 1 to 1% higher. Standard Ol of New Jersey was up 2% and California 2 points. Baldwin and General Electric gained 2 with Lima Locomotive 1. In the miscellaneous list advances running from 1 tc 2% were scored by National Biscutt, "nious Players, Allied Chea> ical, U. 8 Alcohol, Columbia . Gas, Ainetian Woolen, May Departmen Stores, Montana Power, and Atlantic Gult. u ‘The market registered an extensive array of substantial advances during the morning. Hurried covermg of shorts impeilead by indications that over-selling had been carried too far in various issues, and signs that cur- rent prices were attracting. the at- tention of bargain hunters caused active bidding for stocks with re- sultant advances of one to four points in many instances. Cessation of the recent lquidation in foreign bonds and domestic issues was apparent also, European issues rising 1% to 3 ile domestic Hens gained %4 The rapid{ty” of the ad- vance in stocks caused some realiz ing which lowered Ynion Pacific, Gulf States Steel, Chicago Northwest- ern and Utah Copper 2 points from thelr best prices. Weakness also was shown by General American Tank, Crucible Steel, Canadian Pacific, Royal Dutch, Shattuck Arizona and Jones ‘Brothers Tea which fell 1 to 2% points under yesterday's’ final figures. Prices were tending down- ward at mid-day under the weight of realizing sales, which were quite effective in. the steel group, Beth- lehem B falling ~ point under yester- day's close. Call money opened at 5 per cent. Early high prices were exceeded to a large degree in many instances in the afternoon when the list generally swept upward again under the leader- ship of high priced industrial shares. National Biscuit soared 9% points. Standard Oil of New Jersey 6%, National Lead, Standard Oil of Cal fornia, General Electric and American Tobacco A and. B 8 to 3% and Bald- win, U. §S. Steel, Corn Prodycts, American Can and Studebaker 2 to 2%. ‘Coca Cola was a notable excep- tion yielding over three points on a large offering. The closing was strong. Prices tapered off from the high levels in the final hour when weak hess developed in New Haven, Texas Gulf Sulphur and American Ice which Sold 1% points under yesterday's close. , Jersey Central also dropped 15%. National -Biscuit, however, in- creased its advance to 15 points. Foreign Exchange ot} 16 STRONGER Upturn in Prices Develops With Resumption of Trad- ing, Today. i { } ! CHICAG(,, Noy. 15.—Notwithstand- quickly developed in the wheat mar- ket today,. Active buying on the part of houses with eastern connections was responsible for the upward swing | of values. Uncertainty at the outset | associated more or less with news |of the overthrow of the Wirth ad- | ministration Germany, but offerings | of wheat were scarce and the market | readily advanced when buyers became aggressive. The opening, which ried from % off to % up, with De- cember 1.17% to 1.17%, and May 1.15 | to 1.16%, was followed by « moderate | sag and then by a sharp general up- turn to well above yesterday's finish. May delivery rose to the highest price yet this season, but then selling lof May and buying of December be- came a feature, and tended somewhat to check, the advance. Prices, how- ever, closed strong 1% to 2% net hig7sr, with" December $1.19% to $1492) and May J1.17 to $1.17%. Corn and oats largely paralelled the gctfn of wheat. After ing % to Yc higher, December 70% to 70%, the corn market underwent alittle set- back, then rose above initial record for the season. Subsequently, May as well as De- cember ascended to above 71 cents, the topmost figures this year. July tuso touched a new high record price for the 1922 crop. Active shipmigs demand from the west and southwest Was a bullish factor. MURRAY AT BEST IN “BROADWAY ROSE” AT THE AMERICA THEATER In “Broadway Rose,” which opened yesterday at the Anjierica theatre, Mae Murray has again added to the dramatic interest of a powerful love story a dazzling production conspicu- ous for {ts gorgeous settings and won- derful costumes. Not the least ister- esting parts of the picture are those episodes where Miss Murray is given opportunity to display her ability asa dancer. There she becomes thé idol! of Broadway and receives the adula- tion which is showered on the favor- ites of the Gay White Way. Success in her career onl yserves to increase her desire for the love and happiness! which every woman craves. And s0| when Hugh Thompson urges her to marry him she consents in spite of the fact that she knowy that his fath- er will disinherit him for marrying a| dancer. The Thompsons, you see,| were of the Fifth avenue elite and) had an aristocratic young debutante already picked out for their son, So when they heard the news through a| detective they got exceedingly busy with son Hugh. The result added con-| siderably to Hosalie’s knowledge of human nature but nothing at all to her happiness. However, that young| lady soon learned that happiness is_ often just around the corner, and in the end things turn out to suit her’ and also the motion ure fans who see “Broadway Rose As Rosalie Lawrence, Miss Murray has a role that gives hi tunity for the best acting sh s ever done. Incidentally, of course. she displays an array of dazzling cos tumes that stagger the average man and bring gasps of delight from the omen of the aud: es PROPOSED BLUE KY LAW WILL WORK HARDSHIP The Dennison blue sky bill before congress would close the mails, t graph and express facilities to any man offering any security in a dustrial undertaking not passed the “blue-sky” ‘hw. an by In other words, a man from Call fornia, Utah or Wyoming seeking capital in Jowa for developing a west ern enterprise rould not. use the mails to sell his stosk in Iowa because his corporation had not been licensed t do business by an Iowa blue-sky com mission Our federal laws covering fraudu lent use of the mails, our state laws covering the organization of corpor ations and our blue sky laws offer every safeguard necessary to prevent the public being swindled. In the face of such protection it ts uncalled for meddling with business to further handicap the man seeking to develop nature's’ resources with laws which would require so much legal advice and expense that it would discourage the averdge man from undertaking the task.
