NEW /YORK, Oct. 6—Disquieting news dispatches from the induced profit taking by ers and renewed activity by short in vr at the opening of toda: rket with the result that most he liet turned quite heavy mous weakness of Standard Oil of New a which sold off five foints, in heavy offerings of buo, recent buy. m sulte e@ other reqerrtly vases of 1 to nearly 3 points we istered by Standard Ol] of Californ on reports of extra earnings for the third quarter, turned heavy today, 2% polnts in the first half b spots Studel yn Produc’ Midvale, Baldwin ah ‘oca Colas There were a few ns to the downward trend States Rubber first preferred advan: a polnt on declaration of the usu dividend and Pierce O11 preferred nd vanced 1% points. Woolworth ani Air Reduction broke through to new high records on small gains. The complexion of the market un derwent ® rapid change before noon when a, remnrkable series of bullish demonstrations was staged in a num er of high priced specialties. The threw the “bears into nomentary panic and there was a rush to get back stocks sold at the oning, resulting in an almost gen eral cancellation of early losses. Stand ard Oil o Jersey jumped from 215 to high record, and Tidewater Oll moved up 4% to a new top In expectations of a resumption of dividends. Peak prices also were os tablished by Houstson On, Wetls Far xo Express, May Department. Stores. Fisher Body, Dupont Powder, onal Biscuit, Corn Products and “inited Fruit, the gains ranging from 3 to nearly 10 points Other strong pote were Western Union, Adams Express and Gulf States Steel, all up 2% to 4 points. Kerosene ts receiving the most attention at pres ent, the unusually brisk demand being attributed to the coal strike, which caused a great many domestic coal consumers to purchase ofl heaters for home use. The feature of the kero- sene market was the action of the Standard Oi! Co. of New York in rais- ing domestic tank wagon prices one cent per gallon, making the New York city price 14 cents and that in New York state outside the city and throughout New England, 15 cents. The Standard Ojl Co, of New Jersey advanced the tankwagon price of kerosene on September 22 one cent per gallon in New Jersey to 13% cents, or 2% centa above the price quoted a month ago. The New York price has risen only one cent, so further advances are looked for. Gasoline sales-continue heavy in the eastern territory, acconiing to all accounts. The weather has been unusually favorable now for more than two weeks, and has stimulated consumption materially. very plentiful, however, and keen competition throughout the east has kept price from going up. Gasoline js still deliverable in New York state rom the Mid-Continent for about 18% cents per gallon. If this continues further declines in tank wagon mar- ket may be looked for.
