FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1922. cEATTLE MAN SENTENCED TO DIE FOR CRIME James E. Mshoney, Convicted of Wife’s Murder, to Be Hanged December 1 at Walla Walla. SEATTLE, Wash, Sept. 15.— James E. Mahoney, convicted of the murder of his aged and wealthy wife, Kate M, Mahoney. in April, 1921, to- Gay was sentenced in superior court to be hanged a: the state peniten- tiary at Walla Walla, Wash. De- cember 1. Mahoney's counsel gave notice of an appeal to the supreme coart of the United States. The body of Mrs. Mahoney, was round tn @ trunk in the Lake Wash-| ington canal here In August, 1921,| after authorities had conducted a na- tion-wide search for the missing wom- following her disappearance in pril of that year. Shortly after Mrs. Mahoney disappeared, Me.honey was arrested on a charge of having| attempted to secure his wife's prop- erty through a forged power of at torney. Mahoney was convicted of first de- gree murier and sentenced to death. He appealed to the supreme ‘court on the ground that he had been deprived of his constitutional rights, but the appellate court affirmed the convic tio nand rectly denied a motion for a rehearing. 1. W.W. STRIKE IS CALLED OFF BY BUTTE MEN BUTTE, Mont., Sept. 15.—The etrike called by Butte branch metal mine workers industrial! union No. 210 I. W. W. was formally declared off Wednesday afternoon following a mass meeting of miners Tuesday night when the I. W. W. leaders were not permitted to speak. At that meet- ing @ committee of 75 mincrs repre- senting the 25 mines operating in the. district was named to present a re- quest for an increase of $1.25 a day in wage and the abolition of modift- cation of the rustling card and con- tract systems. This committee met with representatives of the mining companies last xlght and. presented | the demands. An answer was prom- ised before September 22. and in the meantime the demands will be laid before the executive heads of the min-| ing companies, most of whom happen | to be out of the state. When the answer is held to the committee a! call will be issued for a mass meeting, of miners, at which a report will be made.
