FRIDAY, JUNE 16, 1922. €be Casper Daily Cridune LEONARD BEGINS EXPECTS THREE - TOUGH BATTLES NEW. YORK, June 16.—A RING CARD AT SHOW TONIGHT Carnival Stars to Wrestle and Box Casper Men in Tough Matches. Wrestling and boxing events will feature the ring card to be offered at the Wortham carnival athletic stadi- um tonight under the management of Tony Bernardi, in charge of this part ef the Wortham shows. Bernardi worked out of Sheridan for severai months last season and wrestled Clar- ence Eklund three times in that city. A wrestling match between Hercu- les Johnson, 184 pounds, and Paul Hutton, 175 pounds, for a side bet of $100 will be the headliner. Both are tough mat men, Hutton being Ber nardi's partner and retained by the carnival to meet ail comers. He wrestled Santel to a draw on the coast. Johnson ts a heavyweight as- pirant of no mean ability, ‘The-winner of this event may meet =.210-pound black from Chadron, Neb., whom local fans are importing, or Bernardi, who is just recovering from a spell of blindness, may take the big negro on himself. Fans will seo a Casper battler in action when Spike Murphy goes against Pancho Villa, a carntvai boxer who battles at 135 pounds, for a 10- Spike must stop the Mexican before the gong sounds the end of the fight or he doesn't place in the money. As a handicap event it should be a thriller. ‘The card was recently scheduled for last night but because of the rain anda small crowd was postponed unti) this evening, when special ad- vertising is expected to @.aw a large attendance. Jack Britton, will meet hith. Three bouts within a month will net Benny at least a quarter of u million dollars, and if he knocks out Britton he will step out of the ring the welter- weight champion of the world, the fourth fighting man since Napoleon to hold two championships. As Brit ton will not be down to 135 pounds, Leonard's lightweight coronet will not be in danger. Leonard's summer season will open June 26 at the New York velodrome with Britton in a 35-round decisio bout. Eight days later he will meo Rocky Kansas at Michigan City, Ind. in an Independence day battle for his crown and on July 27 he will battle for the world’s championship in ' Jersey City with Tendler, recognized as the most formidable of contenders. After that he may rest for a while. No mod- ern champion has such @ record. Leonard his all to win and nothing to lose with Britton, for whom the op- posite is true. Leonard has also hiy reputation at stake when he meets Kansas, though the Italian may be surprisingly better; and in the Tend- Jer bout he is taking a yard-wide chance. : Only three men have held more than one title at one time in bexing history —Bob Fitzsimmons, Terry McGovern and Johnny Butt. Leonard, who is 26, has fought two Previous no-ecision bouts with Brit- ton, who is nearly 38. ‘Tendief is 24 and has been boxing since 1916 when he was peddling pap- in, Philadelphia. Leonard has de- ‘feated Kansas but the Buffalo man has a decision over Tendler, eee Seat GOLF MEMBERSHIP IS LIMITED BY CLUB HERE The decision of the Casper Golf club to limit its membership to 100 has caused a flurry among local men who have been intending to make ap. plication for membership in the club but who have deliyed about putting their names on the dotted line. During the past three days George Jarvis bas been swamped with mem- berships so that only a few of the 109 remain untaken. Mr. Jarvis said this morning that the concession at the nineteenth or Voistead hole had been placed in capable hands, there- by giving the club professional and the greens committee an opportunity to devote their entire time to the con- dition of the course. * The attention of the members is called again to the fact that the grand rock removing bee will be held at the club Monday night and that mem- bers who do not show up are -unning the risk of being followed by account- ants with adding machines when their game is off and they wish to turn in good scores. Caddies naturally prefer to caddy for players who tip them, consequently it makes it difficult for caddie masters to assign caddies without preference. Furthermore we have Neard complaints from vis- iting players that caddies were in- solent when not tipped. Therefore eut it out altogether.” The revised Westwood course em bracing nine new holes will not be ready before late fall, it was an nounced. , It will have a total yard. age of 6.271, the first nine being 3.130 and the second nine 3,161 Par will be 71. That for the present courna, is 70. r What ts said to be the first “Hole in One” tournament in this country is set for the Westwood course in October. e The new Canterbury Unks will open next month.
