SATURDAY, MAY 13, 1922. GRY OFSTARVING PEOPLE INTHE NEAR EAST IS HEARD IN CASPER Movement Sponsored by Local Clubs to Buy 700 Famine-Stricken Chil- Barrels of Flour for This is the movement,. or gy by civic fraternal and patriotic organizations throu, tarian Casperites are asked to support in the local Near East! relief drive Tuesday, May 16: Seven hundred barrels of flour, Mills, Sheridan, Wyo., cost, (is the quota assessed to Casper. It represents in money $2,450, as the four is purchased at $3.50 a barrel. ‘That the Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions’ clubs snd the Chamber of commerce are united in support of the movement is conclusive proof of the merit of the @rive. For the first time since the famous Liberty Loan ard Red Cross drives of the war peri.“ all local or- ganizations, realizing the crying need for relief for the starving Armenians, have thrown their concentrated ef- forts together in support of the move ment. All are working whole-hearted- ly to put the drive “over the top" and keep unsullied. Casper’s_reputation as a Mberal giver to worthy causes. Every donation mde in the city fram the widow's mite to the million- alre’s more substantin! donation, will be spent in buying Wyoming flour for the countless thousands of starving) WHITE and undernourished orphans of the holy lands, the earliest home of Christ- fanity. The overhead expenses of the nationwide drive are being paid by Cleveland H. Dodge of New York, and @ group of his associates. ‘The appest which the movement carries from a humayitarian stand: potnt is well sect forth in the follow- ing: Armenia’s hope is in her children. ‘Throught them, and them only, can she hope to rise again. Six hundred years of persecution have reduced ther from twenty-five millions of Ne to about three millions. The last en years of war have been responsible for = ratio of destruction practically one-third of her entire pre-war popu- lation. “This is the anniversary of the res- urrection of Christ. “Christ rose from destruction to live again in the world for thousand years. thousand years kept n Christian faith will keep Him silive till ‘the end of time. “The Armenians, who were among the earliest of Christ's supporters and whose faith, enduring through un- told hardships, has helped to keep Christ in the world through centur- fes, face complete extinction. Their children only can save them. And it tis only with American money and American relief activities that these children can be brought to maturity. “On this anniversary of Christ's res- ‘urrection will you not contribute all you can to restore the diminished in- come of Near East relief, which has mecessited a cut of twenty- per cent in appropriations and condémned thousands of little children to death? “Only you and your money can com- maute this sentence and accomplish the resurrection of a race through the care of its children.” Court Asked to Define Ouija WASHINGTON, May 13.—-The su- preme court has been asked by a pe- tition filed by a Baltomore manu- facturing company to apply its pro- found learning to the question of what fs an Ouija board. ‘The federal government, through the United States district court at Baltimore, with that utter lack of sentimentality for which it is noted, and with the bluntness of a tax col- lector, has classified the boards as “sporting goods” along with tennis racquets, snowshoes and golf clubs. ‘The manufacturing company, de fendant in the case, claims the board is “a grade of motor automatism in- volving considerable sub-conscious action of intelligence” and not sub- Ject therefore to a tax of ten per oent > FALL FATAL TO MADISON GIRL basis of assertion by Ella Gnerlich, the friend of Miss Johnson, that she jumped from the moving car when Hunt turned away from her residence, \y after being asked to take her home. eo as MICHAELS BESTS BURNS. .A VANCOUVER—Bobby Michaels, York, won the decision over Ghertte (Roush House) Burns, light- Welknt champion of British Columbia {ten rounds, and delivered to the Armenians out America, that humani- manufactured at the Denio at PATERNALISM BY LAW MAKERS 1S HIT BY BANKERS Resolutions Adopted by Ex- ecutive Council of Ameri- can tion Also Opposes Bonus. HARMONY BETWEEN PEACE OFFICERS 15 MAINTAINED UNDERWORLD FAILS IN EFFORTS 10 CAUSE RUPTURE Despite indication of an effort to disrupt the harmory which exists between the sheriffs office in Cas per, the state law enforcement de- partment with headquarters at Chey- enne and in some instances an ef- fort to disrupt the harmonious rela- teus of high state officials and the ‘ocal officy announcements wero made here by Sheriff Joe L. Marquis upon his return from Cheyenne, that no incident could transpire vutside the acts of one or the other of the departments or the officials interested to bring about such a re- sult Attributing the effort to disrupt the relationship to underworld cie- ments of this district, all depart- ments affected state frankly that the effective results which have been secured here would have been impos- sible if not for the complete «co- operation of the other departments. Recent rai_s here gave rise to the statement that the cleanup acttvi- ties were handled by other forces than the constituted law enfores- ment agencies in Casper. In view of wide information gathered in the cases by The Tribune this state ment has proven a fallacy. Sheriff Joe Tl. Marquis upon his return from Cheyenfie where he was stopping while in attendance at fed- eral court when the charges were published characterizes as “vicious” the effort to discredit his office and the administration of other county agencies including the office of M. W. Purcell, county attorney. While giving the state law en- forcement full credit for the co-op- eration given in the cleanup activi- ties, officials here insist that the state agents who were in Casper came here at the instance and re- quest of Sherifr Marquis and did not know the object of their visit here until they received orders at the sheriff's office after their arrival. Considerable politics is said to have entered the local situation and it is reported that attempts are bo- ing made to bring pressure to bear on officials from many sources. The effort to inject political en mity or feeling into the activities here and the plan to discredit high state officials through charging them with direct cleanup activities, is held chiefly chargeable to the effort of underworld agents who have come to realize that a change of any kind might be beneficial as the rigid law enforcement activities of pres ent officials here has made Casper too warm for them. In a semi-official statement from the state law enforcement depart- ment.full credit was given Sheriff Marquis and Mr. Purcell for the close co-operation given on every hand. ‘The statement assures that the state officials believe‘ that Cas- per and Natrona county facing the hardest problems in the state, are getting the most effective results. Never once has an agent of the state law enforcement department ‘been handicayed in a single in- stance by the sheriff's office. We have had full co-operation of Sheriff Marquis and his forces and although these men have been tested many times they have always proven loyal and are a result-obtaining organiza- tion.” Never once havo officers of this county betrayed the confidence of officials in cleanup endeavors despite published reports to the contrary. It was specifically stated that agents of tho law enforcement de- partment “have never gone over the heads of local county officials” and every visit which has been mafle to Casper has come at the direct re- quest of Sheriff Marquis. During the period that Sheriff Marquis has been the incumbent of the sheriff's office, nearly a year, The Lafayette is accepted everywhere as one of the world’s finest automobiles. Replying to the suggestion advanced by the British delegates at the meet- ing of the foreign thinisters in Paris in March that Cilicia, the southern {Turkish province recently evacuated |by the French, should be made a na- jtional home for the Armenians, Kema! The score was 6-0. there has been but comparatively few weeks that he has not had mem- bers of tho state law enforcement department, government prohibi- tion force or government narcotic agents working out of his office. All these forces pay tribute to Sheriff Marquis for the thorough going manner in which he has conducted his office and for the cooperation they have reccived. ‘The last step taken by Kemal Pasha before leaving Adana was the suppres sion of all foreign control either by commissions or capitulations.
