FRIDAY, MARCH 17, 1922. SISTER FEARS FOR LIFE, MAN UNDER ARREST Defendant at Cheyenne Be- lieved to Be Paroled Convict or in Possessicn of Lat- ter’s Papers. CHEYENNE, Wyo., March 17.—A man giving the name of J. W. Smith, ‘who informed the pdlice she feared be intended to kill her, either is H. A. ‘Morgan, & paroled convict from Leav- ‘enworth penitentiary, or is in posses- sion of papers belonging to Morgan and indicating that the latter was sent to Leavenworth for a homicide com- mitted in France. The prisoner who ‘was taken into custody at a rooming house, declines to discuss himself or the papers, antl the woman also has Become reticent. She has been locked up, pending developments. A .45 cali- bre army automatic pistol was found in Smiths possession, this verifying the woman's complaint that he had threatened her with such a weapon. A letter found on Smith and ad- @ressed to Morgan at Leavenworth bears thu «ciurn address “Hortenstein, Hillsdale, Wyo.” This is believed to refer to Frank Hortenstein, a Hills- dale rancher, who now is in the coun- ty jail here serving a fortyday term for illicit distilling. Hortenstein was sought recently as a witness in the investigation of the murder of Walter 4Bud) Christensen. When deputy sher- iffs went to his ranch to question him they surprised him with a batch of hooch bubbling merrily on his stove. He was arrested, therefore, under the liquor law. He claimed to be unable to throw any light on the Christensen mystery, but was committed to jail ‘on the liquor charge. Now he is to be interrogated in regard to Smith or Morgan, and both interrogated with the idea of ascertaining if either or both know anything about. the Chris. tensen case. The reason for such in- terrigation has not been revealed, but fs supposed to have been found in the letter beating the return address of Hortenstein.
