Y. and Frisco SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 24.—A di- rect passenger service between San Francisco and New York will be in- augurated January 3 by the Pacific Mail Steamship company, reviving a service begun by the company 14 years ago whon passengers were tak en across the isthmus of Panama on muleback, it was announced last night by T. A. Graham, vice president and general manager of the company. The trip will take 28 days and the four vessels in the service will sail at 18-day intervals. The boats are the Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela of its own fleet and the Santa Ana, a W. R. Grace boat used in the South American service, but recently char- tered by the Pacific Mail, In addition to passengers, California food products and other freight will be carried. Points of call will be Los Angeles, Manzraillo, Mexico, San Juan, Guatemala, Acajutla and La Libertad, Salvador; Havana; Balti- more and Norfolk. The New_York al will be at pier 33, Atlantic terminal, Brooklyn. The company also will open a New York office with a man from the San Francisco head quarters in charge. The rest account of the Merchants bank nomi- nally stood at $9,500,000. The Bank.of Montreal has agreed to assume all the labilities of the Mer. chants bank for the consideration of @ cash payment of $1,050,000, together with a payment of a block’ of Bank of Montreal stock which wouid repre- sent one share of that stock for every two shares of the Merchants Bank of Canada.
