Randall for 1920-21 (The report submitted by Miss Bess A. Randall, public school jurse in Casper, for the school year of 192 0 and 1921 has just bern made public and follows in full.) During the year 1920 the schools doubled in size but department. A system of school nursing has been o ized and tablished of which we can well be proud Gs the Good sesaten! obtained e its efficiency. In this system of; nursing {mn the schools our great aim is: ] To prevent disease among school children, ‘To correct such physical defects | as hinder the child's progress in | school. To instruct school children along | the lines of sanitation and hysi- ene. To teach health habits that are invaluable to the growing child. To create an active interest in public as well as personal health. | Throughout the school year each) school is visited every 48 hours by! the nurse and at @ certain signal of the bell all pupils who have been ab- sen} because of illness or have been recently exposed to contagion, all pu- skin eruptions, inflamed eyes, severe coughs, or colds, sore throat, or acute abnormal phusical) conditions of any kind, all new pu-| pils admitted since the last visit and all pupils who have been excluded by the nurse on their return to school are sent to the nurse for examina- tion. Of these visits, of which there were 55 lest year, 5,180 examinations were made. Out of this number there were one small-pox, two diphtheria, nine measels, 24 chicken-pox, 555 cases of ringworm, 57 scabies, 39 pediculosie, one impetigo, 260 con- junctivities, Of the number exam- ined 780 were treated in school, 926 were excluded tem} ly because of suspected contagion, 295 were admit- ted under observation and the remain- der were pupils with minor ailments of who had returned after an ill- ness and were examined before being allowed to remain in the classroom. Any pupil excluded from school and who does not return in a reasonable length of time is visited in his home by the nurse learn the cause of his continued ence and to ascer- tain whether or not he is receiving the proper medical attention. ‘We had only about 420 cases of in- fectious disease among the school children last year, and thanks to Dr. O'Donnell’s efficiency in quarantine work @ very small percentage were taken ill In school and@ these were dis- covered immediately and excluded. The remaining pupils in the room where a child-was taken {ll with an infectious disease were examined for symptoms of the disease and the room "fumigated. Each pupil during the school year is given a complete physical exam- ination of which @ record is kept and ail the children found ive by the nurse are later examined by the also made great advancement in every of Casper have not only Although the enrollment in! school doctor and the defects veri- fied.
