Sterling Mule Creek - Explains Problems Facing (From the Wyoming Oil News) An article on oil which will attract widespread attention because of the forceful way in which the facts are laid before the people appears in the November number of Hearst's Maga- zine. It is entitled “Casting Our Oil on Troubled Waters, Where Will the U. S. be in 19317" by William G. Shepherd, well known writer and for- mer war correspondent. Many of the facts given by Mr. Shepherd have been recited before and are well known among the oil men but he dresses them in new clothing in such @ manner as to impress upon the pub: lic the seriousness of the situation in regard to a future supply of ofl for this. ec $ The conclusions reached by Mfr. Shepherd are practically the same that have been set forth repeatedly in Wyoming Ol News and which are to the effect that the country faces a shortage of oll in the near future which will force prices to a higher level than they“ havqever reached in the past. While we have been fur- nishing the major portion of the world’s supply, we have been drain- Ing our own’ reserves. Other nations have been gathering in and conserv- ing supplies agaimsi the lean years while we have sprayed the earth with our supply. And this in the face of the fact that oil when used is gone and another crop cannot be grown to replace it in the manner that the sup- ply of wheat, eotton and wool can be replenished each year. Mr. Shepherd points out that for every man, woman and child in the United States 50 gallons of mineral oil are taken out of the soil of amor- jica every day. And for every man, woman and child of us there is a de- | mand for an average of 52 gallons a | day. The extra two gallons which do | not come from American wells come from Mexico. The rate at which our} oil is being consumed will exhaust America’s entire supply in 18 years. The year 1930 will find America’s ofl consumption almost doubled, with production lagging some> 235,000,000 Surveying and Locations Geologists Oil Expe-«s Oil Field Maps Blue Prints Wyoming Map & Blue Print Co. barrels behind: The writer tells how America dis- covered oll for the remainder of the world and how it led to ‘the ag® of machinery. Out of 8,000.000,000 tar- rels taken out of the earth for world use in the past 60 years, United States furnished 5,000,000,000 barrels, and now we are coming to the end of our supply. Using 16 times more oil per c@pita than the people of other nations, the United States is getting ready to have to de,énd on the out- side World for the very source of its life. And today, wherever American capital turns in the world in {ts search for oil, it finds the gates barred against it.e Three-quarters of the world’s possible oll fields are closed to Americans. The reason for this is that the other nations have discov- ered the need for oil and are trying to discover oil. They see the Amer- {can supply failing and are worried. Oll, the writer declares, is at the present time the hidden ‘subject of all diplomacy and. he reviews the activ: ities of the British, French and Japa- nese governments. ‘The other nations ae gaining control of new oll flelds and looking to the future. The United States is shut out of these future fields even while she is supplying these nations from her own dwind:, ling supplies of oil. of these nations pave lterally gone into the oil busiti®ss and there have arisen laws supported by armed pow- cr barring the United States from three-fourths of the oil producing countries of the world. He says there are serious times ahead. In the meantime the United States is liter- ally swimming in oil and is spraying it over the rest of tho earth.
