Is it because the base sinks and allows the brick to spread? That isa rare possibility, but that is NOT the ordinary cause. The real cause is expansion and contraction. A chimney is heated and cooled a great many times during its life. It may be fifty times in a single day. It is bound to be fifty times in any month. It may be next to red hot when a driving cold rain sets in and chills it very suddenly. Each time it expands and contracts, it loosens the mortar that holds it together, and gradually, though sometimes very quickly, it crumbles and falls out from be- tween the brick, Then a strong wind comes along and drives the heat back down the chimney, if it is held there for just a short time the flames, find their way through the brick joints to the studding, and the studding being kept very dry is all ready to start-a fire. It may smolder and go out, then it may get just another little whiff of wind and come through the roof, and the house is doomed. This is the one cause of more fires among residences than any other one cause. This cause alone cost the country $16,000,000 in 1919. Do-you want to take your chance of cremation from this cause when you can just as well have an abso- lutely fireproof chimney? ‘ ASBESTOS CHIMNEYS-ARE THE ONLY BUILDING UNIT IN THE WORLD THAT HAVE NO EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION. Asbestos Chimneys are made in blocks each of which is a complete building unit. The outside shell is two inches thick, and the round flue hole inside is two inches thick, with an air space between the two. The blocks are 16 inches square and 7 inches high, so that when you set one block upon the other you have 288 North Washington and K Street.
