Editor in-Chief of the Roycroft First of all, let me explain: I am a healthy individual. I enjoy the use of my body in all its natural functions, I do not have: to consult physicians, chiropractors or doctors of any kind. I know how to keep well. I know that if I treat my body with proper consideration I will not enjoy poor health. I'believe my good friend. J. J. Hanavan, M. D., when he says, “there is ne exact science of medicine.” bssare there are honest M. D.’s just as there are honest lawyers (a few). I know the study of the human body and its ailments, by M. D.’s, has made rapid strides, and that the list of prescribed drugs for the cure of diseases has been shortened to a very few by the advanced physicians. I know there are quack doctors of all kinds, unscrupulous and money- grabbing, Also I believe there is no one science for the cure of disease which is absolutely sufficient unto itself. I believe the day is coming when the best community doctor will be a combination of M. D., D. C., D. O., C. S., and X. Y, Z., all mixed with common sense but with emphasis on the D. C. The other day I jumped out to Davenport, Iowa, at the invitatiofi of my friend, Dr. B. J, Palmer. But at Davenport I felt at home amid a surrounding of Roycroft furniture, mottoee and a very friendly atmos- phere, It was an audience of nearly twenty-five hundred of earnest, wide-awake and receptive folks. They came from all over the eountry, Graduate and student chiros, professional men and women, prospective ue ae skeptics, a few investigating M. D.’s and a goodly number of patients. Next day B. J. showed me around. I found an institution well man- aged by efficient people. It is run on a sound business basis with high standards, There are several buildings, the most important one being the D. D, Palmer Memorial Building, erected in memory of the discov- erer of Chiropractic. This discovery was made in 1895 by D. D. Palmer, father.of B. J., and founder of the school. The Memorial is a beautiful piece of architecture. In tt are class rooms, clinic, a most complete X-ray laboratory, and a large lyceum hall seating three thousand, The other buildings are devoted to class rooms, reading and rest rooms, a modern and complete printing plant, a cafeteria and the busi- ness offices. Adjoining are two large dwellings amid spacious lawns and flower beds, These are thoroughly equipped sanitariums or health homes where patients are well taken care of. Of course there are some who knock B. J. and the whole outfit— but every successful man and institution gets that. B. J. and his wife, who is an authority on anatomy and a teacher in the school, are putting {t over. Their school and the science of chiropractic are growing rapidly. ‘ I talked with scores of students and those who had graduated and are now practicing in all parts of the country, Never before that have I seen such enthusiasm, such loyalty, such an earnest, intelligent and devoted body of ‘people, For the most part they are plain, wholesome and reasonable folks, Thera are some chiropractic schools that advertise a six weeks’ course and some offer to teach by mail. From them an impression has gone abroad that the science is a trivial thing, a fake and a humbug, and of course the M. D.’s have helped kick this ball along. The course in the Palmer School runs from three to four years, \ Now why should I be giving the Palmer School all this free adver tising? No, not because I had a chance to blow my own horn to the chiros—but because I believe the science of chiropractic has a deal more real common sense mixed up in it than the world knows of. I believe the chiros are doing humanity a service that in many instances approaches the miraculous, Chirepractic has a fundamental basis that ts logical and sound. In theory it is that all disorders of the body can be traced to the pressure on the nerves at the point where they branch off from the spinal cord through the openings in the spine; that this pressure diminishes the pésstbility of the nerve carrying to its extremes the vital impulses sup- p}ied by the brain, As for instance, squeezing a rubber hose will lessen the flow of water through ft, The chiropractor relieves this pressure by reducing the misplacement (er sublaxation) of the spine by a atmple mitnoy, of adjustment, The mere thorough the knowledge of anatomy and physiology and a lot of other olegtes the chiro has, the more suc. eesaful he is, Same with any other profession, Knowledge means power wherever it is applied, j But I am net expounding a thesis on chirepractic for I know ve lttle about it from a strictly scientific standpeint, It looks to me thoug! as if the medical profession will have te accept chiropractio as a definite and reasonable method of curing disease—for they sure are doing it and grewing in numbers al! the time, The ROYCROFT Magazine has in the past opened its pages to writers on chiropractic because we belfeve tn It, As a consequence some of our good M. D.’s have eanceled their subscriptions, I have a letter before me now from ene which says—“I don’t care for the chiro- practic bunk in your paper so cancel my sub,” Another letter from an eminent physieian says, “While legitimate medicine has Jooked on dur. ing the centuries, innumerable ef these cults and faddists have come and gone, and the procession will keep merrily on when chiropractic has been long since forgotten,” These doctera are old fogies and evidently are past the petnt of - profession, With a wave of the hand they diamiag a scienee which is occupying the minds and en les of a large, growing number af men and wemen whe have an excellent right to their theeries and who are preving them every day, And Ff ean't be led ta believe that a therough knowledge ef chire. practic is anything but a scientific profession and that it will be fully accepted as such by bread-minded people the werld ayer, .
