FISHERS Of U3. URGED TO MAINTAIN, RATE Newsprint Market Higher and Labor at Highest Point in History, Publishers Are Told in Convention NEW YORK, April 28.— Warning against a possible future demoraliza- tion in the newsprint market, T. R. ‘Williams, president of the American Newspaper Publishers’ association, in his address opening the 34th conven- tion of that body, told publish- ers newspaper rates should not be al- lowed to descend. He urged upon the newspaper publishers the need of co-operating with government forces in restoring world peace and bringing business conditions back to normalcy, and especially in repealing unneces- sary war-time logislation and conox- fous features of federal taxation laws. He pointed out that newspapers must meet the problems in materials and labor since the average contract price of newsprint for the first six months of this year is higher than the average contract price for all last year and labor is at the highest point known. “While the outlook in the news- print market may be regarded as im- proving from the, publishers’ view- point,” he said, “it has been pointed out that the market may become de- moralized to such an extent that later in the year some publishers may be tempted to make reductions in sub- scriptions or advertising rates and throw down the bars to all the old- time wasteful practices and bad busi- ness methods.” Bs His suggestions for extending’ the usefulness of the association included the appointment of a newspaper me- chanical engineer to increase me- chanical efficiency, and a legislative expert to supervise legislation affect- ing papers, Footprint Left In Red Man Is Found in Rock Reminiscent of the days when the red men alone plodded along the trails of the great western country and a fig- urative illustration of footprints upon the sands of time, an interesting relic is now in possession of The Tribune. ‘The relic itself {s of stone ang bears, great similarity to a hifman foot. So perfect is the impression that it woul be easy to establish the curio as a left pedal extremity. To further add to the impression that it is a human foot there is a full imprint of a foot vamp on the upper surface, showing bal’, arch and heel of foot plainly. The curio was picked up by Carl P. Taylor and brought to The Tribune by John Hayes. It is probable that it will be turned over to the state historical so. ciety as a curio. All Alike. It was little Maurice's first day at school, Instead of playing with the other little boys he lingered near the door where the woman principal was showing the janitor how she wishea the steps cleaned.
