40,000 WORLD WAR VETS IDLE, SURVEY SHOWa Improvement Shown by Ameri- can Legion Weekly in Employ- ment Situation Affecting Service Men (By United Press) NEW YORK, March 22.—From a “peak” of more than half a million jobless ex-service men in the United States shortly after the first of the year, the unemployment situation af- fects veterans of the world war appears to have taken a turn for the better, accor to a survey of the national situation made for the Am- erican Legion by the organization's official publication, the American Le gion Weekly. Based on “the best information obtainable” the _ number of unemployed veterans on March 1 was placed at 400,000 with “promise” of further improvement.”” A chain of employment agencies op- erated by the Legion in every state has done much to relieve the situation in various ways, according to Legicn officials. s encouraged. a mevement from cities to the farms, and has insisted that workers who left their jobs to go to war should en- joy seniority rights on par with those of military age who at home. Ex-service men have served more in proportion to their numbers than other workers, according to tho Le- gion’s survey, because of the opera- tion of seniority rules and efficiency standards. Nearly a yes: is requirea for the returned veteran to get back to his old stride in industry, accord- ing to the testimony of large em- ployers of labor. Another thing that has handicapped the ex-soldier is his | restlessness and nomadic tendencies, both products of the strain and cir cumstgnces of war service. MOTHER AND DAUGHTER GRADUATE AT SAME TIME—Mrs. Mary Keane and her daughter, Helen, aged 16, stood side by side and received their diplomas at the Lane High school in Chicago recently, both having completed the home economies course with honors. The automobile centers of Detroit, Cleveland and Indianapolis report a slight improvement of con- ditions. In Chicago conditions are stationary, it is said. The average ex-soldier had lit-| tle taste for agriculture when he came back from the war. He chose to work in the siaall factories or stores in the neighboring county seat, where, dur- ing 1919, jobs were plenty and wages high. When those jobs began to go there was at first an exodus toward the larger cities. The Legion strove to discourage this. That movement has about spent itself and farmers throughout the west now report little difficulty in getting help. The South reports improvement. The Pacific Coast, a land — where there are the three great seasonable occupations of fishing, lumbering and fruitraising, has been able to decrease the number of jobless veterans by half in two months, according to ad- vices from there.
