CA * WaALsea tee it st oH UES i tn PAGE EIGHT HE PAID $0,500 FOR A HOME BUT HE DIDN'T GET IT THEM! (This article and others dealing with local conditions are written for ‘Tho Tribune by members of the Casper Real Estate board. The following is contributed by Ben Scherck of the See Ben Realty company.) This was told us by the wife of the man concerned: “They were a couple in their thirties. They had owned a fine home in another city, had sold it and come to Denver to live. Her husband put his money in mining stock—and lost it all. spas They wanted a home, but he was stubbornly prejudiced lo DISCOVERED owning a home was mentioned he re- Prospect of Permanent Relief Is iterated his intenion of getting one as soon as he had cash to buy it out- right: “He could take his pencil and figure it out for anyone that even if a man had a thousand dollars to pay down, the interest on the balance of, say $3,000, would drag along for over twelve years and would finally total the sum of $1,200. ae “The interest bugaboo had got him Held Forth by British on his blind side, He could think of Medic nothing else. Yet here in his history| been since 1906, the year in which he came * | to Casper: “From 1906 to 1908 they lived in apartnients, costing an average of about $60 a month. For the next two years they lived in a house renting for $50 a month. Between 1910 and 1918 they moved cleven times and their rent averaged $30 a month. From i918 to the end of 1920 they moved four times, lived in very un- desirable houses, yet paid an average rental of $45 a month. and 1920 they moved eighteen times and their expenses in moving, count- ing breakage and wear of furniture, new furniture necessary, house clean- ing, etc., was over $1,700. From 1906 to 1920 they paid $6,600 in rent, mak- ing their total expense for housing during that period $8,300. “Early in 1921 he died. “He left hig wife and his two chil- dren an insurance policy of $2,000 and a five-room house that cost them $45 d month to live in. “About the first thing his wife did was to move into a furnished room. She had lost not only her husband, but her home as well. “Without his realizing it, this man (By United Press) LONDON, March 19—At last there is a prospect of permanent cure for leprosy, which means that thousands of outcasts may look forward with hope to the future. After twenty-seven years tn the In- dian Medical service, Lieut. Col. Sir Leonard Rogers has announced that his efforts in medical research work have resulted in the discovery of treatment which destroys the leprosy bacilli in the human tissue. Sir Leonard says that while he does not claim to have discovered an infal- lible permanent cure, this achievement is nearer at hand now than it has ever been before. “In the case of one leper,” he said, “sight was restored after treatment. Others have regained the sense of touch, and in the case of a man who could not walk two or three! hundred yards beforetreatment, he can now walk ten miles.” Sir Leonard explained that for a long time the only drug known to be of value in leprosy was chaulmoogra oil, which is obtained from the seed| of a tree that grows in the wild in India. But this ofl was so nauseating that it was impossible to administer it in doses large enough to be effec- tibe. “The first step in advance,” said he, $500 more than the ‘fearful’ sum of, interest which had held him back from buying a home. “Needless to say he never got “was made by Dr. Heiser, the Ameri-|enough cash together to buy even a) can doctor in the Philippine Islands, | $3,000 home. who injected the oil intra-muscarly,| ‘Yet he spent enough tn rent and and obtained an apparent cure in 11 per cent of his cases as the result of a prolonged course of painful injec- tions. “It was at this point that I took up the work In 1915. I obtained a soluble | sodium salt of the unsaturated fatty acids which form the bulk of the oil, and I found that I could inject this underneath the skin or into the veins safely, causing less pain, and with greater effect on the disease. Reac- tions occurred with the leprosy bacilli in the tissues, which has never been done before. “Owing to the long incubation period of the disease it is not yet possible to say that any of the cases are per- manently cured, but we now have real grounds for hoping that this may be moving during those fourteen years to have bought an $8,000 house. “When he died he could have left! his wife and children a comfortable home that would have cos: them only $6 to $9 a month to live in and he could have saved enough, by being ‘ree from high rents and moving expenses, have paid the premium on $10.0) worth of insurance instead of $2,100."
