DEATH SENTENCE FOR RODENTS Io URGED BY AGENT Use of Poisoned Grain Most Ef- fective in Exterminating Pest, Says G. M. Penley All the prairie dogs and ground squirrels in Natrona county will re- ceive death sentences this season if the county agricultural agent has his , and he is backed up by the United States Biological survey at Washington and the extension depart- ment of the University of Wyoming at Laramie. ‘The rodents are to be destroyed thru the use of poisoned grain, preferably oats. A new method of preparing the poison is being used and is found to be very effective. Sugar and syrups are mixed with the base poison in such a manner that the bitter taste is de- layed until the unsuspecting rodent has eaten enough to seal his doom. An instance of the effectiveness of this method is related by John Tobin of the Two Bar ranch, who last year placed a spoonful at each hole, scat- tered over an area of approximately 2,000 acres, and found that it killed at least 99 per cent of the pests. The county agent states that few people realize the vast amount of dam- age done by these rodents to the crops and grazing land of this state. In many parts of this county nearly all vegetation is destroyed annually | by these pests. and economical. agent can furnish this material | to any one needing it at the cost of the material, he doing the mixing himself. Anyone needing this should get in touch with G. M. Penley, at the county court house as he expects a shipment of poisoned oats - about) April 1. BOY BURGLAR IS SHOT TO DEATH CHICAGO, March 15—One of three boy burglars was shot and killed by @ policeman in a battle on the roof of a theater building early yesterday. The others were captured. ‘The police declared they were cut- ting a hole in th roof preparatory to a safeblowing. HORSES PERISH IN FIRE ON NEWCASTLE RANCH! NEWCASTLE, Wyo., March 15.— After fighting his way through a! blazing bara on his place at the foot of the Limestone, Jesse Scott saved his cows but two horess, his harness and tools and the born were destroyed. | People along the creek who could see the blaze started for it but ar- rived after the barn had been entire- ly destroyed. Enactment of internal revenue tax legislation ahead of tariff revision was advocated in a statement today by Senator Watson of Indiana, a\Repub: lican member of the senate finance committee. He also declared for: re- peal of the excess profit taxes and the higher surtaxes and substitution of “a moderate sales tax.” A budget law and arrangements for payment by the allies of a definite amount of their debt each year iso were urged by the senator. ee age tte NO TRAGE FOUND OF GAA STOLEN LAST SATURDAY No trave has been found of G. M. Penley’s Ford touring car, stolen last Saturday from in front of the Lukis Candy Kitchen. thieves made an unusually quick get-away as the sheriff's office was notified within a few minutes after the car was taken. Wires were sent to neighboring towns requesting officials to be on the lookout for a new Ford touring car. About two hours later a call came from a deputy at Salt Creek asking for the engine num- ber of the missing car, saying a car bearing the first description had just passed thru Salt Creek going West. An attempt was made to overtake it, but failed. The only clue was a hood for a new car found a few miles West of Salt Creek. The speed of the thieves had evidently heated the motor to the extent that it became necessary to remove the hood. The car was taken between 12 and 1 o'clock while Mr. Penley stepped into thesmokehouse, being gone less than five minutes. The owner had some insurance against theft.
