Slaw ~ 30,000,000 Barrels of Oil ‘Josephus Daniels, secretary of the mavy, in his annual report to Presi- dent Wilson for the year ending June 30, says Naval Reserve No. 3, in Na- ‘trona county, Wyoming, is estimated contain $9,000,000 barreis of high grade oll,. This: reserve, which covers 9.481 acres on the Teapot dome, is in 38-78 and 39-78 and was created by an ordei of withdrawal signed by President Wil- son on April 30, 1915. It lies south- east of the Salt Creek field: There are lucing wells on this reserve. tary Daniela says that while the entire reserve is covered by claims none are considered valid@®by the navy or by the department of justice. Un- der the terms of the ofl land leasing act of February 25, €920, producing wells only lying within the naval re. serves can be leased. In view of the fact that there are no producing wells within this reserve, the‘secretary says the navy’s interests’are considered very well protected. While this reserve may have bean covered with claims as asserted by the secretary, the records in the Douglas land office do not show many filings under the leasing law, The Maryland Oil company has applied for a permi¢ on @ large acreage on the west side of Teapot, but this borders on and is out- side of the reserve.» The only appii- cations. so far ‘disclosed consist of four filings By the Pioneer Oil and Refininz compahy on the NW%, the NEY and SE% of 3-38-78 and NW% of 10 38-78 The identity of this company’ is not disclosed in the application but its ud- dress is on the sixth floor of the First National Bank building, Denver, where the Midwest Ofl company has its of- fices. This company was incorporated in. Wyoming in 1914 and the directors were H. M. Blackmer, O. H,. Shoup, Berne Hopkins, K. ©, Schuyler and 4. B. Barnes, all of whom are connectt.1 with the Midwest except Shoup, who resigned several years ago. ~TODRILL LAND Extensive Holdings in Montana Fields to Be Opened for Development The Northern Pacific Railway com pany, ‘which owns 450,000 pres "located on various oil domes and structures in Montana, has adopted a nite policy looking toward the e nt_of its Prospective’ ofl lands, The company will within the pext week or two. be- gin issuing permits in a restricted man- ner for the exploitation of the more {a- vorably located holdings on a royalty basis. ‘This will be the first step iu the new policy. It is understood that it has not been definitely decided, how- ever, whether its oil land business will be handled by a subsidiary company, similar to the plan adopted by the Southern Pacific, or in some other man- ner. The information that the company has definitely adopted an oil develop- ment policy was recently given out in Billings by President Charles ‘Donnelly, The company owns several millions of acres of land extending entirely across the state, of which 450,000 acres are In Cat Creek; Devil's Basin, Crazy Wom- an's Pocket, Baker and other districts, In the vicinity of Baker the company has: lands upon which gas has been de, veloped, and in Cat Creek it has acre- age within four miles of production, There will be no indiscriminate open- ing of the lands, it is stated, dnd ap- plications for prospecting permits will be carefully scrutinized as to their re- spénsibility. President Donnelly state! that between now and spring plans will be laid to go ahead with the oil devel- opment on a large scale either through the organization of an’ oil company by railroad stockholders or through an ar- rangement with one or more of the large producing companies, The de- cision of the company is looked upon as of far-reaching importance in con- nection with the development ‘of the Montana oil resources, PROSPEGTORS LEASES ISSUED BY THE STATE Portland, Wyo., Oil Syndiqate, Rawi ins, 8B% NE%, NE% SE% of 15-26- 86; NE% NEY of 21.26-86, ~ Margaret N, O'Connor, Gillette, all of 16-41-69. The Kasoming Oil,Company, drilling in the southern part of the Salt Creek fleld on sections 11 and 13 and adjoining the holdings, of the. ©. T. During November 480 tank cars were moved out of Winnett, Mont., loaded with crude from the Cat Creek field. This is an average of sixteen cars a day. Production Shows Increase. Wyoming and Montana fields showed a slight increas« in production for the week ending December 4, according to the estimates of the ‘American Petrol- eum Institute. The average daily pro- duction for the week ending on that date us compared with the previous week, ig as follows: Wyoming— Dec, 4, Nov. 27. Salt Creek 26,500 26,500 4,100 4,050 3,050 2,875 4,800 4815 6,400 5,025, 2,400 2,250 Totgis, Wyoming --.. 47,250 46,275 Montana— Cat Creek ---.-2-..--- 3,500 2,400 Totals, Wyo, and Mont. 50,750 48,675 Salt Creek Progress Surprising. The progress in new work in the Salt Creek field is surprising even the old timers of that region in the large num- ber of rigs and drilling wells now in operation there, The previous record for the, field was last year when 65 wells were drilling or had the rigs up and ready for the tvols but at present in spite of the sea- son, there are about 7% rigs and wells drilling in the Salt Creek oll field and more are being completed each day. + The Kasoming Oil company is easily the first among the companies doing thid new work and this firm has 21; rigs, and wells ,drilling on Sections 11) and 13 in T. 39 R. 78, The Mike Burke Oil company has three and the. E. T. Williams has four in the same vicinity. The larger companies are also just as active as the smaller ones for they appear to want to develop their hojd- nee as fast as possible. The Midwest only reported to have about a doz- en wells drillings and rigs up’ in its own namé but win the wells drilling and the rigs up companies aftil- fated with the Midwest are taken in- to consideration, this total surpasses all others in the field. The Western States, Salt Creek Consolidated and other firms that are interested with the Midwest in tracts in the fleld are all making a strenuous effort to put down holes as fast as possible. Progress from this level to the second Wall Creek sAnd will be made with 8-inch casing and thence to the third sand with 65-8-inch pipe. This test is primarily for the purpose of discovering whether the second and third sands carry oil as they do in the Salt Creek.district and the result will determine forever whether the life of the field will continue after the first sand has become unproductive. It is expected that between 3,700 and 3,800 feet the second and third sands will have been penetrated.
