Local politicians had been haranguing a crowd in front of the Union Clun, where Gereral Pershing was to bk. feted. The crowd got out of hand and began throwing rocks at automobiles in which Americans were arriving for the banquet, Word was dispatched to Gen- eral Pershing, who was about to start from the Tivoli hotel at Ancon and what might have been a serious inci- dent was thereby averted. President Porras, formerly Panaman- jar minister to the United States, is ex- erting every effort to allay this nn- friendly feeling, and it was .to assis. him in this enterprise and to seek a better understanding with the citizens of the Panamanian republic that Ser- ator Harding abandoned his reluctagrce to visit foreign soil while in Panama. Leading citizens of Panama ‘realize fully, Americans here say, that it is only with the backing of the United States that they are enabled to pro- serve their independence. Colombia could, it is admitted, recapture the country in brief time were it not for the protecting influence of the United States, which unofficially assisted Pan- ama in its secession from Colombia.
