W'LEOD BACKED IP AY AUDIENCE I RING BATTLE Wheatland Match Ends in Near Riot When Local Wrestler Responds to Blows With Like Treatment WHEATLAND, Wyo., Dec. 7.— When F. C. Titus, real estate and in- surance man, went onto the‘stage in the Iris theater here last night where a wrestling match was being held he- tween George McLeod of Casper and Joe Stake of Wheatland, and knocked MeLeod down, a near riot was narrow- ly averted.“ Most of the audience swarmed up on the stage and formed a protecting circle about the injured Me- Lead after the spectators had seen the Casper wrestler kicked, following the swing Titus had made at his head as McLeod stood wrestling on the mat. McLeod was taken to the dressi room where his injuries were dr by a doctor. Titus was arrested by Sheriff Homer Payne, who declared the match and all bets off, and who order- ,e¢ the admission money returned to the spectdtors. The 200 sports fol- lowers who witnessed the match belfev- ed they had received more than their moneys’ worth. McLeod was taken in- to custody by Sheriff Payne because he believed at first that McLeod had struck the first blow in the mix-up with Titus. However, a large majority of the Wheatland sports followers believe Mc- Leod to be innocent and think there will be little trouble in showing that he was in no way to blame for the trouh's. Shouts of, “Kill Titus’ preceded the wild scramble for the stage after the audience had seen Titus, knock Me- Leod down while wrestling Stake and then kick the Casper wrestler as he lay on the mat, according to eye-wit- nesses. Titus apparently had become enraged on account of the unusual roughness in the match and seemed to fear that Me- Leod was becoming too rough. Stake won the first fall in 26 minutes with a top body scissors and bar arm hold. Shortly after the intermission when the two wrestlers were sparring for the next fall Stake rushed McLeod to the ropes. One eye-witness states that Referes Tommy Doctor tapped Stake on the back signalling him back into the ring. He did not go back and McLeod shoved him back into the ring with no mean force, This appeared to antagonize Stake who doubled up his fist. Me- Leod returned the favor, Both had about an even break in the rough work which followed, neither be- ing willing to take the others’ “love taps.” The climax came when Titis Van Gordon. clerk. § Asa F, Sloane, city Moved by W.
