Che QUAKE ZONE Ig NDONED BY SCORES PEOPLE Cheyenne Bears Witness to Steady Stream of Coast Visitors Who Cut Visit Short to Leave Los Angeles CHEYENNE, Wyo., Aug. 9.—Shoula the west wind bear faintly to his bend- ed ear the echo of a coarse, ribald. sound, the listner need not wonder— he merely will be hearing San Fran-} clseq gloating over the discomfiture of Los Angeles, ‘‘the largest city on the Pacific coast.” San Francisco was the largest city on the Pacific coast until an earth- quake dealt it a solar plexus, where- after San Francisco’se growth ceased to be conspicious and that of Los An- geles became phenomenally so. The result was that the census of 1920 re- vealed that the city by the Golden Gate had been eclipsed in population by its southern California rival. San Francisco’s consequent peevishness cannot be described and need not be imagined—anybody who has come into contact with a San Francisan since the fatal day of the census bureau’s an nouncement well is aware how pra found it was. But now—well, now all fs changed. For weeks and weeks the earthly sol- idarity of which Los Angeles erstwhile boasted, to the vast detriment of San Francisco, has been superceded py an gustability of foundation which hae caused Los Angeles humoroi:: dubbed “The Shimmy City”. former anxiety of ea travel to Los Angeles 2 there sojourn jn the wort est pPLess-| agented climate, has been succeeded Ly a feverish desire to go away from there as soon, as rapidly and as permanently as pocketbook and railroud schedules make feasible. The s¢tuation ts re- flected here by a steady tram of east- bound travelers, flowing away from the ‘earthquake zone” on the nation’s chief artery of transcontipental traf- fic, the Union Pacific railroa}. Los Angeles’ popularity as a vacation re- sort, it would appear from the reports of the eastward bound, has been not merely damaged, but destroyed. Wherefore the sound that comes down the west ayind—San Francisco is avenged. f IDEAL CAMP FACILITIES. PROVIDED AT BLLNGS From Billings, Mont., comes the fol- lowing information concerning the manner in which the tourist park in that city is Conducted. The camp site is a mile from the cen- ter of the city on leased ground, which is outside the corporation limits. A grove of trees provides shade and swings and rustic benches have been installed. A dance pavilion on the grounds pro- vides a source of revenue for the up- keep of the park. Several dances are given during the season to which all tourists are inyited. The park has a rest room, office, fur- nitureg fable for literature, maps; route ‘sheet, writing table, - special writing “material and telephone. Fireproof brick ovens are being built for the convenience of those who do not have portable stoves and wood is furnished free. Running water is piped to the grounds which are high and dry. The approach has been grav- eled and nicely graded. All tourists are asked to register and to give information concerning the roads over which they, have traveled. This information js published in & daily bulletin posted in the Commercial Club rooms. Merchants profit from the installal> tion of a telephone at the park, as many tourists place large orders for supplies over the phone. The head- quarters at the park is kept supplied with papers and magazines for the benefit of the visitors. U. OF W.
