FRIDAY, JULY 23, 1920. soins eee Che Casper Daily Cribune [RON SHUTTERS CAUSE OF MOST RIOTS IN “EAST” Rolling of Iron Shutters by Mer-! chants in Constantinople Starts More Riots Than | Political Agitators. (By Associated Press.) CONSTANTINOPLE (By = Mail).— Iron shutters have probably caused more riots, massacres and pogroms in the Levant tha: i shops in the h poves. When they are banged down they make as much noise as a machine-gun. Every time there is rumor of any sort of trouble some timid mer- chant slams down his shutters to pro- teet his plate glass. Without investi- gating the cause, other merchants fol- low instantly with such clatter that the public becomes pani y and rushes ahout trying to discover the cause of the flurry. At such moments, excited crowds will, credit any rumor which is put into direulation. ‘Pickpockets avail them- selves of such opportunities. Soapbox orators, street fakirs and magicians gather crowds by this device. In any Turkish city the circulation of a rumor that a movement is to be started against Christians will cause all the Armenian and Greek shops to close within a few minutes, and frequently the ng losing of the shops fans the religious hatred of the Moslems into ac- tien. a VAUDEVILLE BILL ON DECK AT SALT SREEK Two fast farce comedies and specialty acts will be given iy the local stage tal- ent at the Gas Plant and Salt Creck camp of the \Midwest Refining vom- pany at the Salt Creek Gas Plant, Sat urday night, Aj Leon will have charge of the show.
