Candidate in Address of Appreciation for Great Welcome Extended by Ohio Friends; 25,000 Visitors Crowd* Marion MARION, Ohio, July 6.—A ‘‘one-man government” was con- demned last night by Senator Warren G. Harding, Republican can« didate for president, in his speech of appreciation for the celebration | staged by Ohioans to welcome him home. It marked the opening of Harding’s summer campaign. “If I believed in a one-man government, if I believed the super- man was necessary to appeal to the sober sense of the republic,”” he declared, “I would not be here in the capacity which has inspired your greeting. Government is not of supermen, but of normal men, very) much like you and me, except that those in authority or ought to be, | n strengthened and broadened in measuring up to a greater responsi- bility.” Senator Harding motored here from Washington. Twenty-five thousand visitors crowded the city for the “home-coming” and Fourth of July celebration combined in his honor. Harding’s advocacy of a “plural leadership” in government was a digression from his main theme, which was a talk thanking his neigh- yors for the celebration. oftheir arrival being a and the 4 4th of July, they celebrated the oc sion, and christened this spot “Ri Independence.” le } = was here in 1 ther DeSmet, the Catholic priest, who was loved by all the white men as well as the Indians, who came in contact with him, was IS here in 1840, and he gave the rock the name of the “Register of the Desert.’ John Fremont was here in 1842, and it was on this expedition that he cended one of the highest moun pinnacles of the Wind River rang which now bears the name of Fremont (Continued from Page 1) in ments were brought forth and the way- firers were regnled. We today are using the same “Great Light” that those early brethren used. After al- most sixty years this Holy Book has been returned to the spot where it was first used at the opening of a Masonic meeting. The unusual lodge meeting that we commemorate today was planned participated in by members of an emigraft train travel- ing westward on the trail to the Ore. gon country. They had already trav- led with their slow-going teams more than a thousand miles, and bad stop- ped ‘here to recupérate from the ¢x- haustion of the journey and to make needed repairs to their trains. It was while thus engaged on July 4, 1862, that the idea of @ lodge mesting occur- red and was successfully car into effect. ‘These pilgrims had a thousand 1niles more to travel over a rough and rugged ; country toward the setting sun before | they were to reach their destination, Their purpose was truly laudible, for they were going to a new, and I might say, undiscovered countr the purpose of building an Empire, what they purposed, they surely Pp formed, the evidence of which is now produced by the reclamation of thex-j and millions of acres of fertile } , the opening up of vast and won- i derfully rich mines of precious metal, the building of populous cities, and the organization of states whose represen- tatives in our national congress guide and rule this great nation; and it is but meet and proper that we today should respect and revere those pio- neer Masons who were among the first to blaze the way through this count which is midway between the rock-| ribbed ‘coast of New England and the golden sands of the Pacific. Here we see the broad and treeless plains stretch- ing away in the distance, yonder the approaches to the’ foothills, green with grasses and decked with flowers of a thousand hues, and in the distance Is the enchanting, soul-inspiring and matchless grandeur of the Rocky moun- tains, all of which afford a variety of scenery so entrancing that the soul is filled to overflowing.
