Furthermore, I beg to assure you that I am earnestly endeavoring to establish between the people and their new army a full, complete and cordial understanding. In this patriotic pu pose I am sure I shall have your re- sponsiveé support and co-operation. This new army is based on the principle that it must be a typical American in- stitution, not apart from the people but @ part of the people, by and for whom it exists. An army that builds me improving them physically, mentally, morally and that returns them after . their voluntary service is over, to the communities whence they came, better ge-earners, better producers and bet- : citizens, In this connection, may I ask you kindly to read the “Statement Concerning Edudation, Recreation and Character Building in the United S J Army,” prepared by the education and recreation branch of the army, and copy of which I inclose? It is impossible for any one not in the army to grasp fully its spirit, its numerous activities, and the im- provements continually being made. You and the people have a right to know all about your army, our army. Reliable information is essential if there is to be an intelligent publie opinon to guide you. 4. The exhibit car will contain specimens of certified seed po. tatoes, types of all the leading standard varieties, exhibits showing the various market grades and classes, diseases of potatoes and methods of control, charts, pictures and bulletins explaining the best Methods of growing and market- ing potatoes. This car will be accompanied by speakers from the agricultural colleges “ericultural departments of the Bur- lington and C. & S. railroads and prac tical growers. One-half day stops will be made in each of the principal potato growing districts and farmers’ meet- ings held. The purpose of operating this special exhibit car and conducting the potato campaign is to stimulate interest in bet. ter methods of growing potatoes, and in the production of better seed pota- toes, particularly in the dry land areas. It is a well known fact that potatoes produced under dry land conditions are superior to potatoes grown last year for seed.
