County. Agpaetl for Losses of Young Cattle in Northwestern Part of Coun- ty This Winter Cattle owners in Natrona county and in other parts of the drouth-strickeir area of the northwest have lost a large number “of young cattle, principally calves and yearlings, this. winter and the reason has been a matter of doubt in the minds of many. County Agent G. M, Penley has in- vestigated a number Of ¢ases inthis county and states that the- losses are} caused principally by impaction caused from the eating of large quantities of unsucculent food. The grass of the past summer Was burned until there was practically no moisture left. This when eaten by the young animals formed a hard dry mass in what is known as the third stomach Which consists of layers of leeflike tis- sue. Animals examined by Mr. Penley Were found to have I ers of the dry hardened grass hetivéen these layers of titsue. The feeding of foodstuffs such as bran, oil.meal and oil cake will. prevent the condition and save the animals, Mr. Penley says.
