NEW TOOL ON MARKET TQ SHUT OFF WATER { | IN BOTTOM OlL WELLS) ‘ An innovation in the manufactur- ing of water plugs to shut off water coming into a well at the bottom of the hole is making its Appearance here, thru the National Supply com- pany. This new tool looks much like the old-style paraffine cleaners in use many years ago in the old fields of the East and involves some mechani- cal features in its building that are novel inthe eXtretie. THe plug con- sists of an Archimédés sttew, about four feet long, and spiraled around a central shaft, mich like w large au- kur, or @ Gofiveyor screw used in flour mills to eohvey grain thru a trough. At déth ehd of the screw is a plate and the spiral is not fast- ened to the central shaft except at one end, The central shaft, about one and one-half inch solid steel, is notched for some distance. In operation the spaces between the spirals are filled with regular tank builders’ oakum, dipped in wet cement and this is held in place by twine and wire during the setting of |the plug. The plug is wired to the} ears of the bit and lowered to place In case the plug is wanted to set above the bottom of the hole, this can be ac- complished by using an anchor of the desired length. When the “plug stops, the weight of the tools tend to push -the spiral flange together, so that the oakum and cement is forced against the wall of the hole, and then the wire breaks when the tools are raised. A few drives of the tools are then made on top of the plug and the spirals, by these blows, are driven together, at the same time being held -in align- ment by the central shaft, and the compression of the spirals are held by a ratchet and pawl pin at the base of the shaft. This operation drives out the oakum against the walls of the hole in a solid body and the steel spirals prevent any possible giving away of the oakum body because of ON PETROLEUM PRODUCTS; SHIPMENTS ARE RESUMED Prior to the European war the im- vortation of petroleum and its pro- ducts into Siberia was forbidden by the government, and the supplies were furnished from the Russian fields.
