BASIN COUNTRY Over 6,000 Acres ‘Being Grown Industry BASIN, Wyo., Sept. 17.—The beet | crowing industry ef the Big Horn) Basin sugar » a8 B commercial | crop, was begun in the Big Horn) Basin as early as 1908 and for eight! years the new produet was shipped to Billings, Mont., where it was made nto sugar. The industry proved so| profitable to the farmer, in all its! branches that in 1916 a factory was justified at Lovell with a daily ca- city of 700 tons. In 1917 another} ctory was built at Worland with! about the same capacity. Today| there are more than six thousand acres grown with this crop and it is} clearly evident that each succeeding; year more growers will be had with an increased acreage for each ¢row-| er. This will mean more factories in a few years. | The climate of the Basin is ideal for the crop. The total amount of! heat, compared with older but grow | ing districts, & in favor of the Bagin. Sunshine cannet be exceeded any- where. Lost time to the farmer und worker is the least here. Hot days and cool nights during ripening | are ideal. The influence of the cli mate on the crop is reflected in the| sugar content which is the highest} in the inter-mountain region. | Soil conditions are unique. The small rainfall of the Basin has never leached the mineral content of the soil it is all here y and all it} requires is to make it available for the growing plant. Alfalfa and bects ure two strongest factors in this work. Both are deep rooted, hardy | and sure crops. The B. is new and the soil posibilities have never yet been reached. The water supply has had an acid test this season. The results cannot! yet be given in figures but it is safe to predict now that the largest alfalfa crop for many years was had, that the grain is above normal, nd that the beet crop is the best crop in the history of the indus-/ try. Two large rivers of the north- ern part of Wyoming supply this! water. The Big Horn river, which has never yet felt the need of a res- ervoir for its ditches, and the Sho-| shone which has back of it a splen- did water shed and already has a nere foot reservo: © its rees of supply. tribu- to those streams have vast pos- ities and their development is al-} ready assured. The beet crop has justified phase of development in older sec- tions, is already forcing its influ- ence here and vast sums of money ure now working for the complete de-| velopment of the Basin. This means more farmers and better farms. | The cash crops of this region point | to beets and livestock. The average tonnage for beets will now return’! $120 per acre to the grower, paid} to him by the sugar companies. In; addition to this he has 8 tons of} green tops per acre or two tons of; dricd tops for feed to his livestock. | This will fatten, with alfalfa hay two} head of steers under conservative use. If the beet pulp and molasses ure returned to the farm and also fed | to livestock they will fatten another | steer. The tendency of this practice | is far-reaching as sugar contains no soil elements. It is easily seen that all the mineral matter taken from the soil by the beets is returned to it again when fed to livestock. No other crop trown has as great a cash value and the sume time reat a feeding value as the beet crop. THEE MAKES OFF WITH TIRE AT POSTOFFICE Auto tire thieves in Casper have become so bold with the reduction of the police force here that they en-! tered the lobby of the postoffice Tuesday and stole a new tire and, tube while the owner left it for aj iement to go to the general de-| livery window. It was at 1 o'clock! in the afternoon when the lobby was) well filled to receive delayed mail| from the morning train. | W. W. Sproul, postmuster here, | plans to keep a good wateh on the | other articles of value in the lobby. In the meantime, he has offered a reward of $10 for the capture and} i convietion of the thief. eae REAL, ESTATE TRANSFERS Jo Servatius et ux to J. H. Bol. ner on part of lots land 2 bleek 141, |.
