HUMAN ELEMENT IN TRUCK “OPERATION (5 BIG FACTOR MIACHINE JUST AS EFFICIENT AS ITS DRIVER, CLAIM ——_—_—____.. | | Service and comfort, are found in the A motor truck is as efficient as its driver, No matter how expensive the ma- chine employed by the fleet operator, | or how skillfully plans have been laid | for its use, if the driver is neglectful, | or actually works contrary to instruc- tions, investment and s are un-| done and the operator faces a loss. | Winning the cooperation of the dri- ver, it is claimed, is one of the first! essentials of successful motor truck} operation. | A big majority of his time ‘the dri-| ver is beyond the supervision of hi: employer and consequently his judg- ment decides the results of an in- vestment, in many cases, of from four to six thousand dollars. The human element in motor trucking is an en- ormous factor—no fixed rule nor ad- vance information of conditions is available. | Ever-changing road surfaces pre-| sent.a variance that demands con- stant alterness and vigilance on the part of the driver. A stretch of rough road may increase the strains on a truck to three or four tin normal. Let the driver overload truck and the strain incre; en or eight times normal speeding adds still more to the strain. The driver must, in addition, be skillful in the management of the clutch, the selection of gears and in the overhauling and general upkeep of the truck. Probably the first quality the op- erator will expect-from the drived is caution. Some concerns in empl ing drivers prefer to train old d} trusted employ educated in their} special line of work, rather than hire} professional drivers. Many com nies prefer settled men of middle rather than youthful pilots. So concerns insist on their men bein, married men. Recently a motor truck publ wrote to motor truck manufac asking them for the most pr problem facing the motor truck ind try. An overwhelming number of re. plies stated that the biggest need was a remedy for overloading and overspeeding. This remedy is square- ly up to the driver, but’he must be guided by his employer. He knows that overloading and overspeedi bad for hjs truck, but he would o orders ‘more quickly if he kn “why.’? He probably knows that ov speeding is destructive, but not t doubling the speed increases the vio- lenee of road shock fourfold. ™ operators use simple illustrations with di ed and lasting effect. For in- stance the importance of proper lub- ricatio ncan be explained so that it will stick in the driver’s mind. By showing him a piece of plished steel under a miccroscope and and point- ing out that the jagged outline—vis- ible to the naked eye—must be filled up with oil in order to prevent the edges from causing damage he is im- pressed more than being merely told to “oil up.” .Educating the driver is largely up to the operator, for the average driver is eager and willing to learn. There are many wa and. holding the driver's . They may be summed up in two fun- damentals. First, the driver should be treatec ely. This can prob- pmplished by. equip ping his truek with a mechanical re- corder which will give him credit for the work he does: The second method is in the installation of a bonus sys-/ tem. -The unique position of m truck pilot as a free agent almost requires-a bonu: tem and the in- vestment at stak tifies it. $78,000 SCHOOL CONTRACT LET FOR GREYBULL * (Special to the Tribune) BASIN, Wyo., Aug. 2.—The con- tract for the erection of the new school building at Greybull has let to R. It means the finest body and chassis that mo- tor car designers can specify. It means a manufacturing standard that holds thousands of measurements to a limit finer than the finest hair. It means a meticulous inspection that discards parts which by this standard prove imperfect. For every fit must be perfect without filing or hammering. This is the standard on which the Cadillac eight cylinder chassis has earned its world wide reputation for absolute reliability. COLISEUM GARAGE __ yy, 127 E.
