A. Russell. He was taken prisoner by the Huns while operat- ing a machine gun in the Argonne Woods two weeks before the armis- tice was signed and when fighting ceased was carrying German wound- ed from the firing line to emergency hospitals just back of the line and under artillery fire. While engaged in this perilous la- ber, to perform which he was forced by his captors, Schoel says he saw many badly wounded Americans butchered by the Germans who did not want to carry them to hos- pitals. Slightly wounded Yankees, Schoel states, were taken prisoners, but seriously. wounded ones were shot or clubbed to death. The use of Schoel and other Amer- ican prisoners by the Huns as stretcher bearers on the fighting line was in violation of the rules of war- fere but an enemy that did not hes- itate to slaughter wounded men was undeterred by the lesser ethics. Schoel was a member of the 320th machine gun battalion of the 81st di- vision. During the last week of Oc- tober he and two companions, while manning a machine gun in an ad- vanced position, were surrounded by the Germans. They continued using their deadly weapon until Schoel’s two companions were killed. He still was pumping steel-jacketed death at the enemy when the gun was rush- ed and he was captured. At no time was he taken beyond the range of artillery, being com- pelled to put in the entire time, save during rare and brief intervals per- mitted for sleep, in carrying wound- ed Germans from the battlefield. He was liberated a few days after the signing of the armistice. Schoel is the last of four brothers to be discharged from the American forces. Of the others, Gilbert and George Schoel did not get overseas, but Jake Schoel was with the Ameri. j can expeditionary forces and was | wounded.
