They turned their fine principles to prac- tice, and showed their loyalty and value in a thousand ways. Their or- ganization had been thought of pre-} viously as meant only for the pleasure and improvement ef the boys them- It took the war to show how the character and skill gained in their scouting work could be turned to valu- able public service. It is only a slight recompense for selves. what the lads did during the past two| years to help them now in their cam- paign for larger effectiyeness. And} in helping them, the nation really! helps itself; because any gain in their resources will become an additional | national asset. The Scouts, now numbering more! than half a million, want more boys to join them, and boys are coming in at} the rate of 1,000 or more a day. | More than that, they want adults to| join as associate members—a round million of them, helping a little with| their membership dues, and still more | with their intelligent interest and| support. There ought to be no question of getting the million. Nobody objects; to the Boy Scouts any more. Every- body approves them. The moyement is endorsed alike by Christian and| Jew, Protestant and Catholic, and| just as warmly by those who profess | no religion whatever. It stands for) good health, good morals, good sense and good citizenship. Be a “good scout,” and join. \ -—_—————9—______ “ These substitute drinks haven’t any “kick”’ in them. RE THE MAN WHO GUARDS THE GATE. Max Eastman says that Frederick C. Howe, the man set by the adminis- tration to guard the gate against un- desirable aliens at the harbor of New York, “did everything short of resign- ing his office” to prevent the recent deportation cf o«hevik revolution- arigs. This is an authoritative and an interesting statement. When an up- lifter like Mr. Howe almost resigns a place on the public pay roll it may be assumed that his feelings are all har- rowed up. Just why he is the one man picked, out of a hundred million, to pass upon the entry of aliens at the nation’s chief port of entry is something that might require ex- planation to those’who do not under- stand alj the implications of the pres- ent national administration’s relation- ships. 9: Speaker Frederick Gillett publicly expressed the opinion that Mexico ought to quit raising hell and go to raising food; quit playing politics all the dime and go to work. This has raised quite a storm. What a sensa- tion it creates when a man in public life telis the real truth. Dailp Cribune —— Bu at is fice aa seconddelage mation, Nev.
