In 1812 America went to war iJ ¢ to establish her rights on the high seas. In 1861, the greatest civil strife the world has ever known, we fought for the emancipation of eee beings from slavery, and that the Union might be preserved. Again in 1898 America went to wat against an old-world power to break the shackles which bound a new-world people to a foreign potentate. And now our heroes are returning from the bleod- iest conflict of all time, where their valor on the battlefields of France was a de- ciding factor in crushing the ambition of an emperor to rule the world. itis inlhononot ihe falleniheroesichithesewarithatinee today pay tnbute by placing flowers upon ihe graves of our sacred dead. Because of its unselfish devotion to a duty which we owe to those wito shed their blood for our common country, Decoration Day is the most beautiful holiday of the year, and on this day a mighty prayer of thanks goes up from a united people to the soldier boys who lie in unmarked graves in for- eign lands. Down thru the coming years the boy who paid the supreme sacrifice in the great World War will more and more be looked upon as one oS the liberators of mankind, and who shed his blo for the freedom of all the world. To all our fallen heroes, whether they lie in Flanders field or rest in peace at home, we today pay a silent tribute to their memory, to which time will add only luster and new glory as the coming genera- tions learn of their deeds of valor and the sacrifices which they made for us.
