FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1919 LT. MPHERSON RETURNS WITH BOLD CHEVRONS Yankee Buck Privates Executives in Emergency, Says Casper Man in Discussing Effi- ciency of Fighters. Casper welcomes the return of an- other of her hero soldier boys who has given fame to the town, state and nation thru patricipation in the over- seas scrap, Lieut. Alec McPherson, a nephew of Angus McPherson, 225 North Maple street, having returned to this city this week, none the worse for his strenuous experience in con- tact with the Boche. Lieutenant McPherson returns to Casper with a first lieutenant’s com- mission and two gold chevrons on his sleeve. He left here with a con- tingent of drafted men on Nov. 2, 1917, was in Camp Lewis two days and by virtue of previous military training was sent almost immediately to the port of embarkation on the At- lantic coast arriving in St. Nazaire, France, on Dec. 10, a few days over a month following his departure from Casper. In January, 1918, Lieut. Mc- Pherson saw action in Beaumont road in the Toul sector and was in that vicinity for a month with Lieut. Col. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., at that time a major. From the Toul sector he went thru the Cantigny drive in which the Yankeé doughboys put a thrill in the world by their wonderful grit. It was here that McPherson was gassed but refused to go to a hospital and was sent to a quiet sta- tion instead. Later he participated in the St. Mihiel drive and was under shell-fire two days. He was also in the vicinity of the Argonne during that encounter and while in officer training school at that time rose from the ranks to u commission. Lieut. McPherson was at Langras when the armistice was signed, attached to the 109th field signal battalion. “The Boche are good fighters as long as their ranks are not demor- alized and they are under leader- ship,” McPherson told the Tribun« this morning, “‘but that is where the Yankees had them whipped for even a buck private in the American ra vuld take his comrades thru a fr in an emergency. If you corner the Boche, he quits, while the doughboy would die before he would submi: to capture in most cases. This past war hus been a lieutenant and non-com- mission officers’ war as far as lead- ership in actual participation is con- cerned, not forgetting: of course that they were under the direction of the higher officers. That is why the casualties in this war was so heavy in the officer ranks.” 7 Lieut. McPherson has put his uni- form aside and will again give his at- tention to his business in this county. STALLION SALE SET FOR MARCH 6, LOCAL BARNS An auction sale in which 20 head of the best pure bred stallions ever seen in this vicinity, consisting of im- ported and American bred Perchons, Belgians and Shires, ranging in age from two to six years and weighing from 1,500 to 2,100 pounds, will be held in Casper on March 8. Breeders will have an opportunity to buy these big, sound, rugged types at their own price. Every horse will be sold re- gardless of price to the highest bidder. tated that there are only about 1,000 first-class Belgian horses in the world. - Owing to the fact that there will be a big shortage of ‘both pure bred and grade horses in European coun- tries it will only be a short time until exportations in large numbers will be sailing for foreign countries, hence it is to the interest of the Wyoming breeder to investigate the horses that will be sold at the auction here. Big drafters are bringing from $700 to $800 in Great Britain and France. THE CASPER DAILY TRIBUNE WOMAN KILLED THERMOPOLIS, Feb. 26.—Jennie Petit Bishop of Roundup, Mont., was run down by a Burlington passenger train in the cut near the Pleasant View hotel. The victim was deaf and dumb and was here for treatment. Her skull was crushed. The coroner's jury has held the engineer blame- less.
