SEE BEN Phone 74W —_—_—_—____— SEE BEN Phone 74W MINING CODE MAY STRIKE SNAG, CLAIM There appears to be slight prospect | that the much talked of “mine code” | legislation will be presented during | the present session. It is said there} has been so much delay in preparing this measure, for the protection of| both miner and employe, that its sponsors have abandoned the idea for the present. | = | WILL GO MORE THAN HALF i WAY TO MEET LABOR CLAIM | The members of the legislature} evidenced a disposition to go further) than organized labor asked when con-! sidering the. Walls measure limiting| the work of women to eight hours. The house very magnanimously amended the bill to provide that, women should not work more than} six days in any week. Underwood of | Laramie fathered the amendment,, which was adopted unanimously. There has been little labor legisla-: tion presented, with the exception of | the bill increasing the authority of; the commissioner of labor and that! providing semi-monthly paydays.! Amendments to the workmen’s com- Pensation act are under formation, to be presented later, the chief im-| port of which will be a provision, assessing the plaintiff’s cost of at-| torney to the damages. It is ex-' pected, also, that. a bill regulating employment agencies will be brot out soon, | PRISON MATRON PROPOSED FOR COUNTIES OF 20,000 A bill soon to be introduced wil) provide that in counties with a popt. lation in excess of 20,000 a prisor matron must be employed for the] ‘o furnish all toolg, labor and machin- | care of women inmates. If enacted the law would be operative at thir time only in the counties of Sweet- water, Lincoln, Sheridan and Laramie. POLL TAX COLLECTOR TO ROUND UP DODGERS County assessors will be interested in the bill introduced by Hunter, pro- viding for the office of poll tax col- lector at $300 a year. This is the measure resulting from the recent meeting of county assessors here, at which it was decided to make an ef- fort to increase the compensation al- lowed these officials. It is designated that the poll tax job go to the as- sessor, thus giving him a salary raise of $300. WOULD INCREASE SALARIES OF J. P'S AND CONSTABLE House Bill 33 by Hunter provides additional compensation for justice of the peace and constables. In pre- cincts of more than 5,000 population it would pay $960 a year, in precincts with less than 5,000 and more than 3,000, $800 a year; less than 3,000 and more than 1,500, $600. A Sys- tem of fees is provided for constables in smaller precincts. TAX PAYMENTS TWICE A YEAR IN PROSPECT It looks as tho folks might pay their taxes twice a year hereafter, under the terms of the Ewart bill. This measure encountered some op- Position in the house, but was ably defefided by its father from Park county, who declared it “common People’s legislation,” and that oppo- sition to it had been worked up by a “few over-solicitous county treas- Urers and tax-title sharks.” Clark of Lincoln county declared it would save the people of the state $75,000 yearly, Ewart declared the present tax collection bill was an antique, EE ALP BURNED IN GAS EXPLOSION ~ | Frank Flavin, of Thermopolis, re- ceived painful injuries last week when an explosion of natural gas oc¢urred at Midwest. Mr. Flavin had gone | into one of the holes to shut off the} gas and remained away for about three-quarters of an hour to give it a chance to sift out. When he re | turned he failed to detect: any smell of gas, but there must have been a! large quantity still remaining, for up-| ‘bn striking a match the blast occurr- fed. He was badly burned about. the | face and right hand and was immedi- ately rushed to Thermopolis for treat- ment. ‘He suffered intense pain for | several days, but is resting easily| trow, ahd. id recovery is look-| cl. for. ! ob / (8), “placed on our statate books in the palmy days of Butch Cassady.” New.
