LETTER OF JAMES E. MARSHALL — QBSTACIES ENCOUNTERED | VINDICATES STAND OF COUNTY LEADER IN OVERSUBSCRIPTION In vindication of a campaign which resulted in a large oversubscription sn Casper for the United War Work paign, County Chairman J. S. echling requests the publication of following statement from James the FE. Marshall, recently returned from Frz e, on why the drive should have proved gn overwhelming success thru- out the nation: : 1. Because in our rejoicing over the return of peace and the winning of the war we must not forget our sol- tiers, who contributed so largely to ging peace and victory. 2. Our boys in France will not get home soon. They must remain in France and perhaps many of them in Germany thru the winter and perhaps much longer until order is restored the large indemnity for the res- ation of Belgium and France have n paid by the German people. The boys could not get home at once because shipping could not be_ provided to bring them home. Eng- land carried in her ships about 60 per} cent of the 2,200,000 American boys) who are overseas. Now England can} not loan us ships for the reason that she is obliged to take care of the car- rying of Canadian, Australian, South African, New Zealand, Portugese and Indian troops. 4. It is important to keep in mind that our boys must spend the winter in northern France, where practically all of the cities and homes have been destroyed. For this reason the boys be will not have access to homes or ac-| tive cities. We must keep in mind that the French people must go thru the winter without heat in their homes the same as they have during the last year because of the lack of coal. The only fires or places of comfort and entertainment for our boys are in the huts of the Y. M. C. A., K. of C., and Salvation Army. These organizations get their coal thru the United States government. 5. The need of entertainment, reading material, moving pictures, educational classes, athletics, etc., is even greater now than before the war ended for the reason that the boys have all of their time on their hands, where heretofore they had but their spare hours from mijitary duties. 6 The winter weather in northern nee is very cold and disagreeable d the mud is deep, and the huts of organizations are the only places in that section, and almost’the only places all over France where*our can go to get the things which re accustomed to at home, such as tobacco and candy; for their church services, concerts, educational and French clasges, athletics and ath- letie goods and for their games and good fellowship to gather around the Victrolas and pianos in these hits. 7. Because -thees organizations are endeavoring to carry to thees boys far from home something of the best of their home life and of their church life, and of their educational opportunities, of the theater and lec- ture platform and the athletic club, and finally their home stores, by pro- viding a eanteen in every hut where they can get their home _ tobacco, sweets, toilet articles, shower baths, and stationery. 8. Because the boys will be more homesick now than ever, since their military duties have largely ceased, the best way and in fact the only way in which you can contribute and bring good cheer and contentment and pleasure to these boys is thru these organizations which are well equip- ped to take care of their needs, 9 Because these American soldier have never failed us, we must now fail them. They have brot it a year before the world thought we could hope for it. Now, therefore, it is the opportunity for the American people to show their love and appre- ciation of these men. Let this cam- paign take the form of a great thank offering of the American people for the peace and victory that has come because of our boys over there. 10, Because every patriotic Amer- can must stand back of these boys by supplying for ghem the comforts and good cheer and necessities which hese organizations can bring to them ntl the last man has walked down > gang plank to American soil and intil the home door has closed behind every returing American soldier. \1.. I was in Snyder, Okla., when I first heard about Tanlac. Everybody there was taking it, and the results they were getting were so remarkable that I bought some myself to try.
