HAT inh . TSN MEN SAY OF BOOZE Business Conditions Stow Mate- rial es under Dry Regime, Is Unanimous Verdict pone It is a well-known fact that bus- iness conditions in Denver, immedi- ately preceding the inauguration | of prohibition, were little bettér “than starnant. For this reason ‘Denver business men ‘were’ skeptical regard- irg the probable effects of a dry state, fearful lest many firms would be forced to the wall. : Sometime ago “one of Denver's Jeading bankers, the late Gordon P. Jones furnished the following state- ments to the Anti-Saloon league of Wyoming. ¢ Mac A. Wilcox, vice pres. lent and manager of the Daniél & Wish- er’s Store company, Says: ‘Our sales for the first nine months of 1916 (under prohibition) shows a gain of 24% per cent in the retail over cor- |/ responding months of 1915 and a gain almost as large’ for the whole- sale departnient) Our’ €dllections have been practically good and show an increase of 21% per cent.” A. D. Lewis, president of the A. T. Lewis & Son Dry Goods company, said: “Our sales forthe first nine months of 1916 have heen 10 per cent in excess of those of last year. Not- withstanding thé fact that(we have made very much less strenuous ef- fort to promote sales than during} Begin- | the same period last years ning with August we have had a} number individual weeks showing an increase frofi 25 to 40 per cept. Col- lections have been exceptionally good beginning almost immediately after! the passing of the prohibition law.” W. B. Owen, vice president and! manager of the Denver Dry Goods company, writes: “Our gain in sales for the first nine months of 1916: is 16 per cent over-last year and our business this year is going to be the largest in the history of sthe Denver Dry Goods company. ‘ Things are better in Denver on account of pro-| hibition and there is more monéy in circulation for that reason.” 1. Berling, president of the John Thompson Grocery company, and the Grand Groceryyr.compa) ‘ites: “Our business has ater ota; a marked incréase in volume, since’ the first-of the year, 1916, but the tone | of the business in on a much higher, plane. The women of the household who look after the family supplies display a more happy and contented} frame of mind than ever heretofore. Evidently owing to the fact that the bread winner now turns over his/ earnings to her instead of dissipat- ing a large portion if not all of its! thus increasing the comfort and hap-| piness of his family. So in a general sense we would say the result of the change has proven’ highly beneficial, | In view of the fact that in our bot- tled goods department. our business aggregated about a quarter of a mil- lion dollars per year, this now being entirely’ eliminated, we consider the’ increase in the yolume of our busi- ness very favorable to ‘the’ prohibition issue.” Mr. Business Man of Wyoming, do you want the people to’spend their money with you or with the’ saloon keeper? If you would enjoy the in- crease in business that would come thru the men of Wyoming spending with you the $5,000,000 or ‘more which his now spent in the saloons, then be sure and vote dry on elec- tion day. Remember a failure to| vote for the constitutional amend- ment is a vote-against it, so bear in mind the sl “Saloon chairman. Ria ino sa a Sera and West, representing 31 jtaty,,” league, ‘Vote the Amendment Ballot First—Wyoming Dry by Noon on “on Blection ” Day.” MISSES LANSING REGENVE VISIT FROM. SEC.
