Brigadier General Extends Sympathy in Loss of Son Who “Nobly Gave His Life i in the Service of His Country” A telegram ricaived this morning morning by'C. C.'Jain of the Hen- ning Hotel conveys the sad ‘news that his as Miles Robert Jain, the Maritie corps, and one of the fi pedir on the Picardy front on Septem being returned to active duty after recuperating from wounds t Americans to go into! r, 15, two. weeks after} received tn the second battle of the Marne. ‘Casualties. for “Please accept my heartfelt sym- pathy in your great loss,” says the message of Brigadier Géneral Charles G, Long. “Your son nobly gave his life in the. service of his country.” The message adds that “the body will) be interred aboard until the end of the war,” indicating that the remains will be exhumed at that time and be brought ot the United States for in- terment. Jain enlisted in the Marines from Denver, Colorado, in May 1917, at the age of 18 years. He wert abdard in September of the same year. He made expert marksmanship and was assigned to sniper. service. in the battle of Picardy, the first engage- ment in whieh Americans, participa- ted on the western front. On July 10, 1918, he was wounded in the second battle of the Marne, being one of those boys whose prais- es have been sung by the French for the daring and brilliant manner in which they drove the enemy back across the river. He had barely re- cuperated from the effects of his for- mer wounds when he ‘fell in action September 15, presumably in-one of the great drives the Americans have undertaken in co-operation with the allies. AMERICAN ARTILLERY HARD @N HUN TANKS WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY IN FRANCE, Sept, 12,’ (By Mail.) In a certain division, they. shever ‘get | through telling about their artillery. They are proud of the artillery, and the artillery is proud of its work. Down in Lorraine the artillery had ; a sport which turned out to be some- thing better than.a game when the di- vision took its stand east of Rheims. The artillerymen used to shoot at German “Goulash wagons” and trucks coming down the roads behind the Lorraine lines. The Americans got quite expert at upsetting traffic as it rolled toward the front. Near Rheims the artillery found bigger game. It was tanks. Out in front of the positions held by the allies were some low sandy hills over which the Germans sent. their taks to harras the American positions. . When the first tank crawled over the brow ‘of the hill, an artillerman applying the “goulash wagon” tac- tics, planted a shelpl squarely in the [ middle 6f the tank, - Meantime, Other batteries gob 4 more Hun tanks one by one as they crawled to @ crosstoad-just behinc the advanced German positions.
