Me- Mahon of this.city, wrtes an inter- esting letter to his. father of. late activities in which his unit. partici- pated. The letter will be of excep- onal interest to oming people in that the 148th Field Artillery num- bers many Casper and other Wyom- ing menm.among its members: “Somewhere en the Front,’ “July 20, 1918. “Dear Father: “eW have been here nearly ‘two weeks. now and received our first mail in three weeks..I am sitting here on the. ground under the camouflage writing on. top of a powder chest. It is véry windy and I have the paper weighted ‘down with my 45. Very warlike, eh? Well, we came into po- sition here at night and worked very |, hard, all night, without a single light. We got all camouflaged and you can’t find us with a telescope now. The Boche has tried to ever since we opened up, but they can’t make the grade. We have lots of them fly over us every day. “J said in my Tawi letter it was very peaceful hére, except at times. Well, we-hadone of the times. This is a fine rolling country, lots of hills and woods, and it doesn’t lookanything like what I thought the front would. Of course we hear firing all the time and at night can see the flashes all along, but nothing like war. Well, the day after we got here we regis- tered our guns. My gun was the one which sent the first shell to the! Huns and I laid the gun. We sure on it so they would know B Battery was in it at last. (Ink ran out.) We didn’t fire a great deal, but we got an ammunition ;}dump on the fourth} shot and also destroyed our tarket, a German headquarters. “July 25. 7 “The next day the Germans start- ed an offensive and we sure were! kept busy* eW fired night and day and every shot was a target. If it had not been for our guns the of- fensive would not have been stopped. At one time the German infantry, was yithin a mile and a half of us.)
