The fighting yesterday centered south of Cambrai, south of St. Quentin and to the heights north of Soissons, three vital points for the Germans, who resisted desperately but un- successfully. German heavy artillery is becoming active from Arras to Rheims, indicating that Ludendorff fears no further removal will be forced upon him. French within Two Miles of La Fere as Result Fresh Gains - PARIS, Sept. 9. (Delayed.)—important progress toward the southern end of the Hindenburg line in the neighborhood of La Fere, north of the St. Gobain Massif, was made by the French today. The war office announced the capture of Liez fort, northeast of the town of Liez, and of wooded regions east and southeast of Liez, within two miles of La Fere. Additional ground was gained in St. Gobain region south of the Oise, where Servais station was taken as well as the wooded area about a mile and a half south. North of La Fere the French pressed in far, capturing Remigny, Montescourt-Lizerolles, Clastres, Seraicourt-le-Grand, Roupy and Etreilers, the last two towns being within three and a half miles of St. Quentin. ee ees RE ORES ee Americans Wive Out Hun Nests in Drive on Montagne Defenses [By United Press] WITH THE AMERICANS IN FRANCE, Sept, 10.—The Americans advanced yesterday in local attacks against Le Bente Montagne.
