BNE BOISE Banquet Last Night and Sendoft at.Depot for Volunteer Patriots The firgt detail of volunteers from Company D of Casper*left this morn- ling over the Burlington for Camp Lewis at American Lake, Wash., where they will commence their ac- tual service in training for officers in the National Army. The detail was) under command of Captain W. L./| Lanning and Corporal Frank Keith, and consisted of the following pri- vates: Louis Schumacher, Charles Spencer, Virgil-Elliott, George Bick- nell, Clyde Long, Clarence Hancock, Chas. Angell and Andrew Kidd. Casper sent the volunteers away with a smile, altho the tears were! close to the surface many _ times, those left behind managed to hide their feelings under a smile until the train bearing the boys became a blurred spot across the long bridge over the Platte. ( Last evening at the Midwest Hotel the Mothers League tendered the de- tail a banquet as a means of showing the boys how their action was appre-| ciated by the people of Casper and} the well-known hostelry made a spe-| cial effort to do its part with great) success. Sergeant Frank B. Taylor of Com- pany D was master of ceremonies and toastmaster for the evening, with | Mrs. Sam Service, Mrs. E. M. Miller, | Mrs. Trivette and Mrs. Murray rep- resenting the Mothers League. Ser- geant E. Richard Shipp represented the city of Casper and its people. Besides the members of the detail, the Mothers League representatives and Sergeants Shipp and Taylor, the wives, children, sweethearts and par- ents of the men were included in the invitation, and about 35 sat down to the festive board. When the inner man was satisfied and the banqueters leaned back in their chairs, filled with good things and good cheer, the toastmaster in a short talk outlined the object of the banquet as a testimonial from the people of Casper thru the Moth- ers League, and extended the best wishes of all to those members of Company D who were going ahead. In response, Captain Lanning thanked the Mothers League for the kindness they had shown the men of the detail, and gave a short history of the efforts that were required to have the detail recognized by the govern- ment. A recent general order, No. 1 sent out from the War De- partment at Washington, prohibits the taking in of any more men ex- cept thru the draft. In order that the men from the Casper company could be taken in as volunteers, a special permit was required-from the Department, and because of the red tape it looked for a time as tho the volunteers would have to take their | pas 's as draftees in the regular or- der. _Thru the efforts of Captain Lan- ning and General Weaver, this was obviated and the members of ‘Com-| pany D of the Wyoming Guard were} accorded the privilege of going into the army, as volunteers. This pro- cedure was due in no small matter to the fact that General Pershing is himself from this State and the cali- ber of the men from here is‘ already | becoming known thruout the Army and Navy as exceptionally brave sol- diers and sailors. In conclusion Captain Lanning ex- pressed his thanks to his old. com- j | ED ON DEPARTURE FOR CAMP LEWIo ATTAIN AND OLVEN EN hen the que’ the Star Spangled feast. Sergeant Shipp re- viewed the formation of the Guard here and the way the men respond- ed to the call for volunteers. He spoke of the extra courage it re- quired to be a “went” instead of a “sent’ 'as the difference between the volunteers and the draftees is some times called. Mr. Shipp also enlivened the table by telling the de- tail that in case they got hungry on the road to Berlin, they could kill a “Kidd” and that they need not fear any trouble along the way as they had in their company an “Angell.” Sergeant Shipp said in part: c} “Weare gathered here tonight in honor of our comrades of the Home Guard who are soon to depart to take up the duties which will fit the m to lead American soldiers who are now fighting the battle for hu- man liberty on the sacred soil of sented the men with a silk flag to take with them on their journey.
