IDAY, AUGUST 23, 1918- PTT) p tile caibte hide asin a gt ton Seeovcesssccccs — president Nelson of Laramie, har received a telegram from the adju- tant general of the army authoriz ing the announcement that a unit of the Students’ Army Training Corps a new organization under the war de- artment, now forming, will be es- tablished at the University of Wyom- ing in Septembet next, and that uni- forms and - additional rifles and equipments will be provided in the near future by the government. This is indeed an important an- nouncement, one the _ university makes with justifiable pride; one that should be of the greatest interest not only to young men under the present draft age of 21, but to their arents as well. OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG MEP The Students’ Army Training Corps (abbreviated S. A. T. Cr) ts an organization resulting from ex- tended conferences between the most noted educational authorities of the United States and officers of the general staff of the United States army. Its purpose is to provide the young men of the country an appor- nity to complete their education as far as possible before being called to the colors—to conserve the human material from which wem ust obtain not only the junior officers for our army, but also the technical- ly trained men who will be so urgent- ly needed. Enlistments in the S. A. T. C. will be voluntary and is limited to phy- sically qualified boys between the ages of 18 and 21 who are already pursuing courses or are ready to enter this fall. Once enlisted, these young men will be soldiers in the United States army. They will be furnished with complete uniforms, including overcoats, of standard army pattern with appropriate in- signia, by the quartermaster’s de- partment, and while in service will not be permitted to wear civilian clothing. The military course will provide a minimum of six hours’ training each week, with four addi- tional hours required to be devoted to subjects allied to the military work, prescribed by the war depart- ment. PRACTICAL MILITARY WORK At the close of each college year training camps similar to those now in progress at the Presidio of San Francisco, Cal., Fort Sheridan, Ind., and Plattsturg, N. Y.. will be setab- lished, and each’S."-A\! T:°O. Student will be put through an intensive six course of practical military including field maneuvers and target practice. While in these camps attendance at which will be compul- sory, the student will receive the pay , of a private (30 per month), with | subsistence, etc., and transportation to and from camp att he expense of the government. When not in camp the student will receive no pay. Military discipline will be be tained in the S, A. T. C. and for) violations of the rules, misconduct or. ent may be dismissed from the serv- ice of the United States and from the university. NO PROTECTED CLASS The War Department niakes it clear that no preferred or specially protected class of young men is con- templated. For certain benefits con- ferred, are required. The measure is essen- tially a war measure and one from which importeant rsults are expect- ed. The idea is that the college man will best serve his country by com- pleting his education as far as may be possible. When a young man en- ed under this system reaches the ge at which he would have been called listed, his case comes up for consid eration by the university and mil tary apthorities. If it appears that the attainments of the young man make it probable that the best inter-| ests of the government will be served by permitting him to com- Plete his college course, a recom- mendation will be made to that ef-| fect, and in this way it is hoped that | an adequate check against the de-| of the supply of trained tech- will be made.
