—— I| 12 o'clock NURSE CLUBS OF i i PPL of Opera i ns with Ameri- facet Units Take bo Exten- sion of Program By KATE RUSSELL There are nurses’ clubs over in France that have meant™so mdcn to the American women who have don- ned the uniform of the Red Cross that the French government has ask# ed the ¥. W. C. &ewar workers, who established the clubs, to form simi-| / liar ones in other stricken partions of France where nurses are ‘needed. So keen is the government concern- ing these clubs that it has asked the Y. W. CG. A: to request any land, buildings or equipment it may need and which it will endeavor to sup- oly. : ‘The French feel that the work of the ¢. W. C.°A. has been so valuable since they have kept the nurses in irits, provided them with com- forts and what dainties were obta n- able, and Whore nc oy th: mmo- rale of these overburdened women, that it is aeetable pened. women will receive official recognition since one of their number has ben ten- tatively approached on the matter of serving on the French commissicn. There are 15 nurses’ clubs in France, extanlished: equipped, and maintained by the Y. W. C. A. It has been estimated that it is the cheer of these clubs alone that Has kept many nurses at ‘their posts and saved countless women from a break- down ‘ Miss Olooah Burner, a war work- er for the Y. W. C. A. has -just re- turned to this country after many months spent in France, having gone over in January. She has been one of the musi tireless in the se vive of the nurses, establishing a ciub for the Johns Hopkins unit. “I have never been associated with a more refined, a more cyl- tured, a more thoroly devoted group of women,” she said. “I feel so proud that they stood for American wo- manhood ferore a foreign nation. We received very little encouragement when we first started out to bring a bit of home into the life of ‘the Red Cross nurse. We were told by people who lived in comfortable homes here and whose worst hard- ship was to limit thefr use of sugar and wheat, that there was no sense in it. Why should gne;set.of Amer- ican women trail oyer France to serve and entertain another set of American women? “T only wish these critics might see the Johns Hopkins unit club in ac- tion! 4 “The nurses are obliged to live in barracks, 88 in one room! When one realizes that these nurses are highly -ctured women many of whom where in positions of author- ity before going over there, one can appreciate what it means to them to steal away to a dainty, quiet nook where they do not need to be in the company of 37 other nurses, all the time. “For ten months these, women lived in a little village in ance, seeing nothing but the barren walls of their barracks, struggling thru oceans of mud, and living in a temperature so cold that their shoes’ were frozen to the floor in the morning. Nor did they even have the comfort of re- ceiving mail from home. On May 1 their Christmas presents were still ar- riving! * “Imagine thenf thus, with no con- tact with the outside world, cold and miseable, and put down beside their cheerless quarters, the club-house that the Y. W. C. A. gave them, a pretty, picturesque building, with long English windows, a big recre- ation room, all done in pale yellows and soft browns. By the way, a whole story could be written around the ways and means we used to get those furnishings which were the wonder of the whole surrounding country. Then, too, We used every ounce of initiative wé possessed to secure 4 dainty tea-table and cups. How the nurses loved those fragile, gold- colored, china cups! If you had drunk out of nothing but heavy stone- Ware cups for months, climbed overs a bench to eat whatever a busy French maid hurled at you, you, too, would appreciate a little lei: Service, a restwul, spot and a piano? Yes, we had one, Don’t ask where we got it, It was a miracle, I think. The only chairs, ie ducky lamp shades, and last, but by no means least, a stove made the nurses de- clare it was tthe only homey place in France.” Our little writing room Was in rose and white, rose curtains, even the blotters were rose colored and there the nurses went to write ome, It was a quiet spot where fey, could go and not hear apyone alk! Is it any wont hen askea vhews they had ere ace Be to eply: “‘T have ‘been to heaven.’” ee _ BROOKS VISIT LANDER Governor and Mrs. B. B.
