MONDAY, JULY 22, 1918 BUNE Wi INTADS GARRY YOUR i The Remar Forum Clad in” mow, was mperial Rome clothea in ermine was the Vision tlie vanishing year of 1917 gave to. surprised popu- lace, The Eternal city mantled in snow was the unusual and almost unheard of spectacle which greeted the Romans on the morning aftér Christ- mas, writes Alice Rohe in the Kansas City Star. Those who -woke to find the city chastened with its white vestments, lying peaceful and mysterious, felt the spell of the unusual ‘ahd wondered if it could be a sign Of peace. Whatever private emotions surged through an astonished pecple, the an- cient chroniclers announced that for the first time In thirty years a heavy snow storm had descended upon Rome. There are those Who recerd more re- cent snow, but not of a similar heavy fall. And snowstorms in Rome, gen- erally occur in January or February. This time for three days snow fell upon the sleeping city and then disap- ve d with the sun's rays at noon. lines and telephone wires were by tke strain that they refused to operate. City’s Routine Upset. The public conveyances were stunned into helplessness. Roman cab horses know nothing of snow and Ro- man cabmen are likewise afflicted. Consequently the intrepid pedestrians found themselves wading through deep slush by noon in a cabless town. ‘The Piazza Colonna was, with the thawing, like a lake of sherbet across which a few venturesome scouts—generally tor- elgners—were wading. In the forenoon a group of Ameri- ean boys from the avidti camp at Foggia—up for a holiday—hired 2 car to take a trip out the Applan Way— but the chauffeur, despite the protests and stronger arguments of the avta- tors, that a little dampness wouldn't hurt a machine, had to renounce the trip at the Catacombs, ‘To such an extent had the unheard of snowfall ~ 80 overcome Value of Sense of Smell | Proved in Discovery of the Substance Selenitim ————___ fe ee Have you an ambition to found a new science? Why not measure a smell? Can you tell whether one smelt is just twice 4s strong as another? Can you measure the difference be+ tween one kind of smell and another? It Is obvious that we have very many different kinds of sineiis, from the odor of violets down to asafetida, but until o measure their likenesses and differences you éan have no sclence < : lor, writes: Alexander Graham Bell in You th's Companion, In the first place we have to, define *n odor, Is {t an emanation of mate- Tal particles into the air or fs it a form of vibration, Hike sound? If you can decide that question, you will have the starting point for an entirely new fnvestigation. If odor is an emanation, it could be reflected from a mirror. yet und sound and heat can be re- flected. Ihave even warmed my hands #t the reflection of # fire in.a mirror of polished metal. That a cultivation of the sense of smell may be very valuable was proved in the discovery of the substance feleuium. In experimenting with the Waste products obtained in turing sulphurie acid, a dl chemist noticed the ° ch Smell of telurtum—an odor that has bo counterpart on earth or in heaven. But the smell was the only indication | of the présende of the substances elt the chemical reactions declared that there was no tellurtum present in the Powder, ‘The chemist therefore con- cluded that, if no teéllurium was pres* bd there must be a new substance “re, as yet undiscovered, which re be mbled tellurtumy ‘hen he had ex- tharted from the all the materials b knew were firesent, he found a Xsidue, whieh proved tou be, as he had Not only the people regarded the plie- on with wonderment, but e 3 7 ’ disturbed the ordinary routine of Ro man Tife. Scene of Rare Beauty. The beauty of thé snow-covered ctty Isa thing Romans will not forget. The panorama, fromthe Pincian “Hill, it- self carpeted’ with a 65-inch covering of white, its palm ‘trees picturesque and curious sentinels in the winter setting, was incomparable. Saint Peter's dome, ermined, with the ball, a white world symbol, as ever dominated the picture,~Nearery the» Pantheon, now white, shone fn its“new garment. Far away over white powdered roofs and terraces through twisted, irregu- lar streets, rose the whitened Janicu- lum, the watchful figure of Gartbalat. mantled in snow. From the ghostiike whiteness of the Palatine, an undisturbed shroud Isy upon the campagna, tn early’morning, through which a specter-like Appian Way stretched toward the truly named Alban Hills. The ; ¢ Forum, snow covered, and covered for three days until noon, was a sight of which the young generation will boast of seeing “back in 1917, the third year of the war.” Up on the Capitoline Hill, the noble equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, rising from the center of the historic square, wore a new mantle of snow, while bis horse was white with fresh und unforeseen trappings, . But like the snows. of Villon—the Eternal ¢lty’s ermine disappeared be- neath sun and squads of street clean- ers, among whom the new common sight of women “whtie wings” told of a wartime world, NN eee suspected, a new elementary sub- stance, This wew' substance, Which was named setenium, resembled black seal- ing wax ff appearance.
