Esther entered the Martinson school last October and has won the affection of both pupils and teachers by her loving and kind disposition and her intense interest in everything that pertains to school life. She excelled in her studies, made close friends of her associates, and was very active in the Junior Red Cross work. She was anxious that all the pupils of her room should be enrolled in the work and expressed a desire to help the lower grades reach a full mem- bership by the work of the larger pu- ils. r She was a member of the Sunshine Maker's class of the West Side Bap- tist church. F, She passed away early Wednesday morning after a short but severe ill- ness of pneumonia, at the Wichita hospital. We teachers and pupils extend our heartiest sympathy to the bereaved parents who must suffer most in the loss of an only child. We will understand better “when the-mists have cleared away” and’ A. Bates County Pioneer Dead. Robert Davis, who was born in the southeast part of this county in 1848, died at Nevada Wednesday of last week. Funeral services were held at the Round Prairie Baptist church Sun- day, February 24, and interment mate at the cemetery at that ‘place. He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Alice Zwahlen, Passaic; Mrs. Sallie Neff, Dodge City, Kansas; Mrs. Emma Gragg, Hudson; Mrs. Alta Earsom, Pleasant Gap; Mrs. Norah Davis, Riofrio, Texas, and two sons, Leonard Davis and Pete Davis, both of Hudson. It is given to but few to spend as many years in one community as did Mr. Davis. He was born in the coun- ty 70 years ago and all of those 70 years, with the exception of the time that he spent in the Confederate army, has been spent within a few miles of his birthplace.
