HE American Red | ‘Cross is incorpo- rated and chartered . by the United States Government. Itisthe only means whereby aid can be given to the wounded soldier on: the battlefield; for the Red Cross is respected and protected by all civilized nations. ‘Government hospital attendants can not have such protection; and in wars past the plan of having the governments at war attempt to take care of the wounded has proved a failure, costing thou- sands of lives that might have been saved by such service as the Red Cross renders. — Instead of supporting this society by taxation and forcing the citi- zens to contribute to this work, the Government has provided that it shall be financed by voluntary contributions, This course is taken confidently with utmost faith in the gracious and sympathetic spirit of the American people. The President of the United States is always President of the Red Cross; and its affairs are managed by great and good men, none of whom receive any pay for their services. The local work of organization and management is done free. No one gets a cent out of it. It-is purely a work of love and humanity. — We should be thankful that the boys who will ’ leave to endure the hazards ‘of war will have the care.and protec- Tec, tion of so benificient an organiza- : tion. No doubt it will be the only means whereby some of them will be enabled ever to feturn to us. It is a privilege we have to help these boys who now are to go out to battle for us. — What is it worth to have them surrounded by wholesome infuences and giv- en tender, scientific care when sick or wounded? Who can resist the appeal to contribute for their sake? Join the Red Cross! By doing so you do not incur any obligation ex- cept to pay one year’s membership fee. You do not become bound to leave home or go into the field service. You simply join in the great work of supporting this service. ‘ ° ~ Your Money May Save the Life of a Bates County Boy Attend the Big Mass-meeting at the Court House in Butler, Saturday, July 28, 1917, at one o’clock, P.
