Governor Harris to- y received a letter from the firm saying they would ship no ore goods into Georgia ‘‘until Sulphur Springs, Tex., Aug. 29. —Two negroes,’ King and Joe Richmond, one of whom had been shot and killed in battle with officers and the other seri- ously wounded, were burned at a tree in Buford’s Park this af- ternoon by a mob which had searched for the men the great- er part of the day. When officers attempted to ar- rest the negroes in a settlement nine miles south early this morn- ing, Deputy Sheriff Nathan A. Flippin was shot and killed and Sheriff J. B. Butler was. shot twice and severely beaten over the head. - He is in a precarious condition and is not expected to live. News of the shooting spread rapidly and soon virtually every man in Hopkins County was in arms, searching the woods for the negroes. The blacks were captured in the woods and brought directly to town. Hundred of persons had gath- ered on the public square when the prisoners arrived. There. was little disorder dur- ing or before the execution. Some of the older mén counseled let- ting the law take its course, but fhey were hoplessly in the minor- ity. . The negroes were. chained to the tree, about which the wood had been piled, and the torch ap- plied. ORDER OF PUBLICATION, In the Circuit Court. of Bates Coun- ty, Missouri, October Term, 1916.
