MAID SAYS MRS, CARMAN CONFESSED TO MURDER Negro Servant Tells Grand jury. ~ New Story About Freeport Tragedy. New York, Sept. 15—Cecelia Cole Man, negro maid in the Carman home, told the grand jury which indicted Mrs, Florence Carman for first de- gree murder that the doctor's wife confessed to her that she shot and killed Mrs. Louis Bailey. This information was made public today by Dr. Edwin Carman, husband of the accused woman, in a statement to newspaper reporters at Freeport. It was this statement of the negro girl, together with the other new evi- at- torney, Lewis J. Smith, that resulted in the new indictment. Doctor Carman has instructed his attorney, George N. Levy, to ask for an inspection of the grand jury min- utes, with a view to obtaining the in- dictment of the maid on a charge of perjury. “We want to find out how many contradictory stories Cecelia has told,” the doctor declared. “Before the coroner she made the sworn statement that she did not see Mrs. Carman in the kitchen onthe night of the murder.” . ‘ According to the latest story of the maid, as repeated by Doctor Carman, she went to the kitchen door after hearing the shot in the front of the house. As she was about to open this door, Mrs. Carman stepped in. She had a revolver in her hand and she ‘said: “Cecelia, I just caught a woman in the doctor’s office with him ard I shot her. Don’t talk to anyone about it.” The girl said that she did not tell this story before because she was afraid and she did not wish to harm Mrs. Carmen. 3 “Reports that Mrs. Carman is weak- ening are untrue,” Doctor Carman “She is ad game as a bantam rooster.” FUNERAL FOR 13 MINE VICTIMS Services Held at Mouth of Col- lapsed Oklahoma Shaft. - Adaméon, Ok., Sept. 14.—A little group of mourners gathered at Union Coal Company's mine No. 1 near here and held funeral services for thirteen miners who are buried 800 feet below the surface of the earth in a slope which collapsed a week ago. Thirteen little crosses, painted white, were erected two feet apart over the death pit to mark the scene of one of the most remarkable mine disasters in American history. ‘ The men met death 2,200 feet from the entrance ofthe slope as they were leaving the mine for the day. Since that time rescuers have been engaged ‘in digging away the debris that clogged the mouth of the slope. The work was kept up day and night an entire week and was abandoned last entire mine had caved in, burying the workers under millions of tons of rock, earth and coal. 4t required ‘six years to dig the mine, and rescuers say it would require three years to reach the point where the men were entombed. As a last re- sort-an effort was made to dig a tun- ‘nel from an adjoining mine to the. ill- fated slope, but a continuation of the and gases forced this plan to be ‘abandoned. There was a heavy engage- ment along the ruins of Louvain, the Belgians penetrating twice to the cen- ter of the city. Yesterday the Bel- gians delivered a fierce cavalry attack on the Germans at Louvain. ~ An Antwerp dispatch to the Central News, dated Sunday, says that the German force, against which the Bel: gians have been operating, has been heavily reinforced, particularly with guns. It is believed the réinforce- ments came from Liege where 1,000 German marines are reported to have arrived. Nish, Servia, Sept. 15.—The Servian offensive movement continues suc- cessfully on the left bamk of the Save. No important developments along the Lower Drina have been re- ported since the Servian victory on September 9. The following official statement was issued today: “On our northern front, after tak- ing Semlin, our troops still continue successfully to pursue the offensive. The hurried nature of the flight of the enemy at Semlin can be estimated by the quantity of provisions, equip- ment, arms and ammunition and other war material foynd in the town. Our troops were received with indescrib- able enthusiasm in Semlin. A, te deum was sung forthe victory of the Servian army. The railroad as far as the station in Belgrade has been repaired and is ready for use in the transportation of troops. A continuous artillery duel is taking Place on the northern front.” Servians Cross Frontier. London, Sept. 14.—A-dispatch to the Daily Telegraph from Athens says that with Semlin occupied, the Servians’ next objective is Peterwardein, the capture of which will open the plain of Hungary to them. Galicia, which lasted seventeen days, is drawing to a close and a general pursuit of the Austrians is being carried out. The feeling is said to be growing at the Austrian capital that continuance by Austria of the present war depends on the outcome of the operations in Galicia, which are drawing to a climax with a battle at Rawaruska, west of Lemberg. The Austria: crown prince, General Conrade and Archduke Fred- erick are on the ground directing the engagement. ee. Beaten Along Entire Front. Paris, Sept. 14.—A dispatch from Petrograd to the Matin says: “The first Austrian army has been destrvyed.
