ARE READY TO CROSS THE LINE War Department Alarmed at Attitude of Texan Executive—Orders General Steever to Pre- vent Invasion, Austin, Tex., Feb. 25.—Goy. O. RB. Colquitt at midnight ordered four companies of the Texas state militia to proceed to Brownsville with ail haste when it was reported to him that Americans had been arrested and held for ransom at the Mexican town of Matamoras, across the boundar when they refused to contribute money to the officials, The governor also sent this mes: Sage to Captain Head, in command of the Brownsville company of the Texas National Guard: “Notify Mexican commander at Matamoras who is demanding money that if he harms a single Texan, his life will be demanded as a forfeit.” The Appeal for Aid. Governor Colquitt received the fol- owing telegram from Captain Head of the company of national ‘guard which has been on duty at Browns- ville for several days at the request of the sheriff: “Have just received méssage from Consul Johnson at Matamoras. Can you authorize me to cross river at order of the consul to protect the con- sulate and American interests? De- mand made upon Americans for mon- ey tonight.” The governor replied: “Do not. cross river unless you re ceive orders to do so. Request Amer- ican consul and Americans to come to Brownsville.” Governor Colquitt has repeated the telegram from Captain Head to the officer in command of the United States troops at Fort Sam Houston. The War Department Objects. Washington, Feb, 24,.—A_ serious clash may result between federal troops and the Texas National Guard at Brownsville, should the latter at- tempt to cross the Rio Grande to the relief of Americans alleged to be im- periled at Matamoras, Mexico. ' When the War Department learned at midnight that Governor Colquitt had issued orders for four companies of Texas militia to proceed to Browns- ville orders were telegraphed Brig. Gen. E. Z. Steever tu send to Browns- ville immediately such a force as he “deemed necessary” ‘and “under no circumstances to permit the crossing of the river except upon the specific orders f the Secretary of War.” Maj. Gen. Leonard Wood, chief of | staff of tre army, recognized the dan- ger in the situation and immediately took personal charge, Over the mili- tary telegraph line from Fort Meyer he sent imperative orders to General Steever to utilize his forces to pre- vent the proposed invasion of Mex- ican territory. | These he supplemented by further | orders through the regular channels of the War Department.
