The spelliug contest will be held in the New High School building in But- | ler, April 6th, beginning at 1:30 p. m. All the test will be written and all pupils will spell the same words. The best speller will go to Jefferson | City and spell in thé State Contest. ~ | The first prize in the county contest is to be $15 and is given by the Mis- souri State Bank and Walton Trust Company. This will be sufficient to pay the way of the contestant to Jef- ferson City and return. This institu- tion has always been liberal in help. ing on anything that tended to make our schools better and we appreciate it. The second prize is to be $10 and is offeredagain by the Walker-McKibben Mercantile Co. These people have never said no to a prize ona spelling contest and are our most’ enthusiastic supporters in better schools. The teachers of the county are coming to recognize this firm as their friend and | |are showing their appreciation of this | | by their patronage as they should do. The third prize is to be $5 and is| offered again by J. F. Ludwick, the| east side druggist. Mr. Ludwick is |always active in the cause of better schools and is ever ready to help in| {anything along this line. His line of books and school supplies keep him | in close touch with the schools of the county. ; I suggest that the township chair- | men arrange for the township contest March 16th. They should consult ' their teachers about the place and the |selection of the words. The Reading! | Circle chairmen will act as chairmen | \of this contest. In townships where, ‘no reading circle is being held the} person appointed in August will act) as chairman. | Supt. Evans sends the following on | ; renewals and new certificates: | | Requirement Number 1. In case | of his failure to attend his county as- sociation, attendance at three town- {ship or district meetings during that | year may be accepted instead of the attendance at the county association. This requirement may he waived for teachers in large cities which are, by {Section 10932, exempt from the super- ‘visory powers of the county superin- tendent, provided such cities have at leastsemi-monthly meetings for seven menths in each year, in which pro- fessional work.approved by the State | Superintendent is being done. Requirement Number 2. Each hold- er of a renewable certificate must also ido the Reading Circle work to the satisfaction of the county superintend- ‘ent for two years for each renewal.
