Pacific to Be Displaced July 1 on Prin- cipal Lines of System. One of the most inexplicable ar- rangements in‘connection with the express business of the United States, and one probably disclosing an unex- pected situation, is that existing be- tween the principal Gould railroads and the Wells Fargo & Co. Express. Beginning July 1, he Wells Fargo & Co. Express will displace the Pacific Express Company on the Missouri Pacific, the St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern, the Texas & Pacific and the Wabash. The significaace of this understand- ing can only be realized when it is considered the Wells Fargo & Co. \ Express is controlled, according to common information, by the Harri- man and Rockefeller interests, while | the Pacific Express is dominated by the Gould lines. The Missouri Pacific, it is under- stood, holds 40 per cent of the Pacific Express stock and the Wabash 20 per cent, making 60 per cent for these two Gould lines. The remaining 40 per cent of the stock is owned. by the Union Pacific. The Gould and Har- riman lines own the Pacific Express, | control resting. with the Gould rail- roads, The announcement that the Wells Fargo & Co. Express would in July supersede the Pacific Express on the | Missouri Pacific, the Iron Mountain, the Wabash and the Texas & Pacific, caused the utmost surprise in railroad circles. Although it was surmised the Wells Fargo & Co. Express had | acquired control of the Pacific Ex-, rress, the explanation given was that the Wells Fargo concern had obtained | the contract with the Gould lines by | | virtue of strenuous competition. The Missouri Pacific-Iron Mountain | system has recognized the Manufac- turers’ Railway as a common carrier | and will file tariffs with the Interstate | Commerce Commission. As_ the’ Missouri Pacific, rather the Iron Mountain, was the pricipal objector | to recognition of the Manufacturers’ Railway, this decision means all. probabil hat the Manufacturers’ Railway will obtain $4.50 a car for all traffic it handles and that this allow- ance for terminal service will be.de- ducted from the through rate. However, the tariff cannot become effective until. the Interstate Com- | merce Commission declares the Man- | ufacturers’ Railway to be a common carrier. When this is done, the Man- | ufacturers’ will be in the same class | as the Terminal Railroad Association. —Republic. © . uniform and made from the genuine | citizens and exposition officials now tin Washington, explains that San 18 Panama-California Exposition. Washington, May 22.—A joint reso- lution has been presented to Congress authorizing and requesting the Presi- dent to issue an invitation to the Re- | public of Mexico, and the Republics of Central and South America to par- | ticipate in an exposition to be held in San Diego, California, throughout the | entire year of 1915, and there is every reason to believe that the resolution will be passed at the extra session. | It came as a surprise to some of the |Senators and congressmen to learn that two expositions are to be held in California in 1915, and both for the purpose of celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal, but the repre- sentatives of the San Diego project, now in Washington, were able to show an agreement entered into be- tween the two exposition organiza- tions in California, whereby the San Francisco organizers agreed to assist | the San Diego people to get the pres- exposition resolution through, after San Francisco had secured federal recognition for her exposi- tion. This agreement was signed more than a year ago. There is no opposition to the San Diego exposition resolution apparent. Senator John D. Works, of Caliornia, one of the Progressives, introduced it in the Senate, and Congressman | Raker, from one of the Northern | California districts, and a Democrat, | introduced it in the House. Col. Fol- lowing the signing of the agreement | with San Francisco, San Diego con- Sented to keep its project in the back- | ground until San Francisco had won recognition from the government, but during that period San Diego proceeded to complete an organization of exposition workers, which contains John C. Olmsted, of Boston, cele- brated landscape architect, who is |e at the i gg srounee in G. Cinthue, ie exponent of | Spanish-Colonial architecture in the world, who is designing the buildings to form the great ‘Mission City,” that will house the San Diego expo- sition, and Frank P. Allen, Jr., who will be Director of Works, and who was selected because he was the man who completed the Alaska-Yukon ex- Position in nineteen months, and had it ready on time. ; Director General Collier has as- sured the members of Congress that San Diego is not intending to rival San Francisco in the matter of an ex- position, but will build and open an MISSOURI By ‘‘Jay Ennese’’ I know of a State in this great land of ours, Whose hopes with the others entwine.
