Johnson, former chair- man of the Democratic State Central Committee, returned from Washing- ton to-day. He brought a cheerful message to the Democrats of the Ninth Congressional District regarding Champ Clark, the Speaker-to-be of the new Congress. Judge Johnson said: ‘Champ Clark is just now by far the most conspicious character in the national Democratic party. Few men have grown more rapidly in pub- lic estimation. “There is undoubtedlya very strong and growing sentiment in favor of Mr. Clark for the Democratic nomina- tion for President. “It would astonish most any one to go to the national capital and. observe the feeling in this direction. It is not confined to any locality or any State, but seems universal. “Mr. Clark will soon be elevated to the second most important place in the nation, and this, too, by practi- cally the unanimous voice of the party, that of Speaker of the National House of Representatives. “Jf he makes good in this proposi- tion, which he is morally certain to do his nomination is a foregone con- clusion. “Mr, Clark is giving but little if any attention to the matter. “If the sentiment at the capital is any index to the situation, Mr. Clark is the coming man. His undoubted integrity, strudy character and fidelity to any trust committed to his hands is the safest and surest asset in favor with the masses as well as the ~as- sociates and political contemporaries.” Kills a Murderer.
