Killed in Duel With Knives. Dallas, Tex., Feb.—Joseph Fadley, of Carthage, Mo., died at St. Paul’s Sanitarium in Dallas from the effects of stab wounds received at Garza, in Denton county. Fadley was found unconscious ly- ing across a pile of wood and was brought to Dallas on a train. He was never able to make a statement. An undertaking establishment is holding the body, awaifing advices from Car- thage. A report from Garza announces that Paul Dorsey has been arrested. Dorséy says he and Fadley fought a duel with knives, but the cause is not stated. Washington, Feb.—An ‘ingenious explanation of the sudden resignation of Senator Thompson of North Dakota and the unheralded arrival of his suc- cessor in the person of W. E. Purcell, has reached Washington. It is, in effect, that Governor Burke has been greatly embarrassed by the senatorial vacancy. There is a surplus of available Democratic senatorial timber in the state. Four of the governor’s most influential friends look with longing eyes upon the toga. Governor Burke, a candidate for the state supreme court, cannot in justice to his aspirations afford to waste any political strength or to make political enemies. Therefore, as the story runs, with the wisdom of a Solomon, the governor has deter- mined to make the one office go the round of the candidates and satiate for a time their appetites for political preferment. Therefore, Mr. Thomp- son was sent to Washington with a senatorial commission to bide awhile, committed to resign in a few months to make way for Mr. Purcell. As the report goes, Mr. Purcell is to remain iu the Senate sixty days or so, when he will give way to Senator No. 3, and the latter in due season is to prepare the way for. Senator No. 4 to have his name inscribed upon the rolls before the legislature elects a senator. Austin, Tex., Feb.—Ex-Senator F. L. Thompson of North Dakota, who|_ arrived in San Antonio a few days ago for the benefit of his health, is reported to be ina dangerous condi- tion. He forwarded his resignation as senator to Governor Burke last Saturday. President Helps Orphans. | Hundreds of orphans have been ‘helped by the President of the Indus- |trial and Orphan’s Home at Macon, |Ga., who writes: “‘We have used | Electric Bitters in this Institution for |nine years. It has proved a most excellent medicine for stomach, liver {and kidney troubles. We regard it as one of the best family medicines on earth.’’ It invigorates all vital organs, purifies the blood, aids diges- |tion creates appetites. Bristow of Kansas. ‘Meat foots up to a quarter of the average house- hold expenses, and it ought to be cheaper to-day instead of dearer than it was twenty-five years ago, because of the greater economy in its prepara- tion and sale. When I was a boy 25 per cent of the carcass went to waste. |Now nothing goes to waste—not even | the blood.” Senator Bristow’s words crystalize the sentiment of protest in all parts of the country against the higher cost of living. Thus far the movement, which first took form in an actual boycott at Cleveland, has met with most success in the west. The east has been slower to follow, influenced perhaps by a widespread feeling among small dealers and in the labor unions, that a universal boycott, though effective as a protest, would actually piay into the hands of the packers, who, with their control of cold storage houses and refrigerator lines could carry their product through a prolonged boycott, through a thirty day’s cessation of trade would put the small independents out of business.—Denver News. y carriage free of Postage ofall mail 4 matter sent by Theodore Roosevelt is South Side Square Ls) PETALUMA INCUBATOR I am taking orders for the Petaluma Incubators, although this line is made of CALIFORNIA RED WOOD they are sold as cheap as inferior incubators. St. Lou's Post-Diepatch “The Democrats had a much more efficient organization than the Repub- licans as is shown by the fact that they polled 90 per cent of their vote."’ This is all the explanation of the Re- publican disaster that Governor Had- ley would offer. For the rest he sig« nificantly referred questioners to Washington, where national issues are made. But there is another explanation: The Republican party’s record was so damaging that 30 per cent of the Republican voters would not vote for the party’s ‘“‘stand-pat’’ candidate they stayed at home. Excuses and evasions do not help the Republican situation. The only safety for the party lies ina frank, honest recognition of blunders and a swift reform. The Democratic land- slide was a Republican protest against Republican wrongdoing. If the lead- ers are too blind to see the warning, the protest will become a revolution. KEEP THE KIDNEYS WELL.
